*I loved Opening Ceremonies. The French have so much more style than Americans.

The gymnastics isn't very good--have standards changed? Hopped landings, crooked landings, landing put of bounds, no artistry...

Today was qualifiers - they play it safe to try to minimize chances of injury. Agree it wasn't that fun to watch (maybe also bc of the way it was covered on NBC primetime).

Really? I thought it was pretty impressive. I only watch every four years though. Between this and us qualifiers, I did notice a much different vibe among the athletes in this post-Karolyi era.

The most interesting one is Kaylia Namour, a French gymnast who defected to Algeria because she wasn’t happy with the French gymnastic federation. The federation was confident the French team would medal this year, but they imploded and didn’t qualify for a single final event today, while Namour made the All-Around and bars finals.

I feel bad for the Team France gymnasts.

The French women's gymnastics team was awful. And the Peacock stream couldn't stop focusing all their attention and commentary on it for that subdivision of the qualifiers. It was like watching a 1.5 hour car crash.

If Kaylia Nemours had been on the team, they would have made the team final with her scores, but the French gymnastics federation likes to shoot itself in the foot to assert dominance (this also seems to be a problem of their skating federation). So instead their gymnasts will be watching Nemours in the all-around and uneven bars final from the stands.

Not sure how long it's been since you watched gymnastics-- they do much more difficult tumbling skills now which means fewer "stuck" landings but more twists and flips and blind landings.

The scoring also encourages them to go fir harder tricks even if they can't do them perfectly, because of how start values and execution are calculated into the final score. For instance Simone Biles does a vault that has such a high start value that as long as she completes the rotations in the air she could probably sit the landing down on her butt and still make the vault final (assuming her second vault goes okay). She didn't do this-- big hop back but stood it up -- but she could have and it might even have been advisable since she was nursing a calf strain. Better to sit the vault down to avoid further injury since this is just a qualifying round.

I wish the replays were more immediate though. I haven't figured out the formula yet, but today I waited 3 hours for one event I wanted to watch to go from "concluded" to the replay being available.

If you’re watching it online, while it’s still in the live cast, you can drag the slider back in the window to back up to see something that happened earlier in the stream for that session.
