I would not be thrilled if these folks are my kids swim coaches

Of all of the things to clutch your pearls about this one is not so shocking. Someone overcharged for a bad life guarding course, I hope you’ve alerted the FBI. You won’t believe what some private school teachers charge for tutoring, which may or may not be effective. Who keeps on bringing up this story?

Who keeps defending this fraud?

I’m also wondering who is so aggressively wanting this to be a complete non-issue

If I had to guess... it would be one of the coaches who was there in a "support" role. Perhaps this guy quoted in the Post article?
“I think it’s unfair what was done to the instructors — not at least giving them an opportunity to retrain,” Bettencourt said. “They do a great service for the community.”

I wonder how much cash he walked away with that day for his "support"?

Wrong. Kenwood is not a country club. It is a for-profit club owned by some backcountry hillbillies.

Also, quite a few Kenwood members eventually get into those other clubs.

What actually happened is way worse than what I envisioned after reading the first thread on this topic.

I figured one kid who was not already certified accidentally completed a recertification program and got a full certificate in the mail that he had not earned. The article makes it clear the impact was much, much greater than that.

This has to be either one of the coaches or their spouse. I can't imagine anyone else who would defend this.

The kid in the article has more common sense than every single one of the instructors, one of whom runs the upper school at Holton Arms.

Parents at Holton Arms should ask what corners are being cut over there too!

When you combine Kenwood and Holton, the grift is on !

They should be banned forever.

Kenwood won’t do a thing. The Stone Ridge swim coach is also a coach at Kenwood and a long-time member. Unless one of the students goes after the coach for the $400 + lost wages and names Kenwood, too. Not a hard case since she already admitted she did it.
Then Kenwood would probably settle to make it go away.

Schools won’t do anything either.

So no consequences.

And they get to keep the 10 grand.

Total money grab. They were probably not even paying the club a fee to use the facility for this. Wow. I have a kid at one of these schools and I am not impressed. Wonder what the schools would do if a student got caught running this scam.

This involves three all-girls schools. Is that a coincidence? I don’t know and that’s why I’m asking.

Yes, all girls schools are known for ripping people off.

Four hours is laughable.

I’m assuming that the kids who took this course were largely from the schools where the instructors coached. If that’s the case, seeing how they’re such great schools, these kids are smart enough that they likely only needed 4 hours to learn what normal kids need 3 days to grasp.

Years ago my winter swim coach handed me (and all of my friends on the team) an American Red Cross lifeguard certification card even though we were taught nothing. I got caught when we had a training day at my summer job. I didn’t get fired - they let me stay on doing non-lifeguaring jobs - but I was humiliated and am still haunted by the fact that someone could have died on my watch. Despite being a top swimmer, I had no clue how to save someone. I often think back to the adults involved, the coach and our parents, and wonder what the hell they were thinking.

The kids at these schools likely do nothing for 3.5 years of high school because they are so smart they learn everything they need to know in semester 1. Why would a lifeguarding certification be any different?

Appreciate this post.

Could this just be a mistake or something? Is there no room for mistakes anymore? I have no ties to any of this btw.
