Maybe business people outside the United States know about Wharton. I don’t think most people in the United States have heard of it. People here like to hate on Columbia, but it has a much stronger brand than Penn.

Are you joking regarding Columbia having a brand?

Columbia has the New York effect, same as NYU.

Of course, people choose Columbia for NYC but I have never heard of it having a brand. It doesn’t.
you have to be kidding. Columbia has a massive brand, way better than Penn for sure.

Maybe you are living in the past.

US News has Penn at #6 best university, #1 business school, #3 medical school, #4 best law school.

For business schools, there is no better brand than Wharton.

I'm from the UK. There is no such thing as a Lower Ivy. There's the Ivy League, MIT, Stanford and Cal tech. Nothing else matters.

I was surprised how people in London didn't know US schools beyond Harvard, Yale, and Stanford.

The top Ivies, MIT/Stanford and Oxbridge have global brands.

Only among the Chinese

Is there a “wow-factor” to the average joe in asian/ european countries, or do more prominent west coast schools like Stanford and Cal Berkeley still have an edge?

If you are a foreigner, I would also love to hear your personal insight in your respective circle/country.

I think internationally, Harvard, Yale, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, MIT and NYU are most known after Oxford, Cambridge and St. Andrew's.

Harvard, Yale, and Stanford are the 3 names people know. Just like hardly anyone here knows schools outside the US beyond Oxford and Cambridge.

DP. Lots of Chinese nationals attending Brown. Exponentially more applying. Definitely brand recognition, or they wouldn't be shelling out (or willing to) to attend.

I am an immigrant. A lot depends on generation and education. Younger people know many more units than older people. Agree that Harvard is probably the only school everyone knows about. Educated people (but not academics) are familiar with HYPSM and also Columbia, Berkelely, UCLA. There is also a lot of idiosyncratic familiarity with various schools. Brown and Dartmouth are no more familiar than, say, Hopkins or Northwestern.

It doesn't matter. US News is not that relevant internationally. Columbia a much stronger brand abroad than Penn. In fact, more people have heard of Georgetown than Penn. It's not fair, but Penn's name is just not that great. It doesn't sound any better or more special than, say, University of Virginia or Wisconsin. 99.9% of people abroad wouldn't be able to tell it from Penn State.

Uhhh no. Columbia falsified data that led to higher rankings for a decade. Both were t10 then and columbia rightfully is not now. Penn ranks higher in US and world ratings for clear objective reasons. Both are much more renowned than the bottom ivies, Dartmouth/Brown/Cornell but Penn is no question ahead of Columbia and has been for almost 50 yrs

Yep. The Ivy League—all 8 of them and then those 3.
