If he's happy with them all - and they're all great schools so makes sense to me - then I'd use my ED card where it seems to make the most difference. That's def UChicago and maybe Middlebury?

ED's best chance would be UChicago in the 1 or 2 spot. They also don't care how many other kids from your HS are also applying.

I think I'd pick Vandy and then UChicago.

Middle bury takes something like 90 percent of its class ED, and I believe Bowdoin is close. What you are saying about athletes really only true for Williams and Amherst.

For the last year with data, Middlebury took 68.7% of their students through ED, and their ED acceptance rate was 4.2x their regular decision rate. Bowdoin took 52.6% of their students through ED, and their ED acceptance rate was 3.7% of their regular decision rate.

Humanities boy. Would be thrilled with any of these reaches based on one visit to each (would def want to revisit)

UChicago
Rice
Vandy
Bowdoin
Middlebury
Williams
Northwestern
Davidson
ND

what to ED 1/2 or RD here?

Chicago ED1 will likely be an admit for a competitive student.

Wow! Middlebury's stats are crazy.

No, if it’s top they apply to ND EA.

"In a top position" doesn't meant "it's top". Probably why she went on to underline this idea with the phrase "equally liked school". Some of us are not encouraging our kids to rank schools in a hard and fast 1 to 10 list. Most kids say, "I could be very happy here" at more than one school and mean it. Not sure why this is so hard to understand

I didn't do a deep dive on Middlebury, but I looked very closely at Bowdoin last year and they take a ton of athletes. 45% of their students are athletes. My son eventually took it off his list because of this. But if you're a great skier, you're golden.

I would really use ED wisely with this kid. I think they could get into Rice or Chicago with ED but possibly none of them during RD.

I would have said UChicago and then Rice.

Both really like private school kids. 3.8 won't hold him back in ED.

Rice is looking for humanities kids. The school wants to be known for more than STEM.

Except this kid could go somewhere that already has a strong humanities department.

I'm surprised - and relieved - to hear all these positive chances for a 3.8 kid (like my own kid). It's hard to get a 3.8 at these schools!

Rice is actually surprisingly good in humanities. Just like MIT has a really good English department and CMU has a great Drama department. It's not all STEM at these schools.
