B-student - suggestions for mid-size colleges?

I think he will get into JMU. Maybe VT. I agree with the Syracuse suggestion. Toss in Penn State, St. Joe's and Temple.

It is a B student if that is the weighted GPA.

Trinity is a much better school than the other three.

In what world is a 3.7/1350 kid a "B-" student? Especially one that has taken Calc BC. What was his grade in that class? Any C's on his transcript?

If he is open to larger universities, it will open many options up (VT, Syracuse, Indiana, Penn State, Delaware, Uconn, plus Alabama, Michigan State as safeties).

For smaller/mid-size, Elon, Providence, Ithaca, Marquette. Gonzaga. It's hard getting mid size that have strong sports, so look to some of the jesuit schools for that.

VT is not taking a 3.7/1300 ish SAT score student.

Mine were above 4.0 and above 1500. One was weightlisted and the other rejected. 2021 and 2024.

3.7 is not VT stats.

How long ago were you helping someone with a college hunt??

Many of those safety schools are reaches for those stats. And VT is nowhere near a safety.

No way, no how.

Not VT. Not with those stats.

So is his unweighted more like a 3.3? You can do the math pretty quickly. Are you including projected junior year grades? I know my daughter’s GPA jumped up after junior year, due to the number of weighted classes.

Penn State main campus, fall start, is generally looking for 3.7 UNweighted.

I don't know what the PP is talking about, but I can guarantee you it is NOT accurate. A 3.4 and a 1270 gets you in at JMU. That's based on 706 applicant data points at one of the upper (but not a Langley/McLean) FCPS HS.

OP, your son is definitely IN at JMU. No bones about it. VT depends on the major. If it's com sci or engineering, then it's a no.

That person's stats were much more accurate than your stat.

Definitely aim for at least a 4.1 and upper 1400 for VT to even be in the weight list hunt.

I think PP meant just Alabama and Michigan state as safeties, not the rest of the list.

Look at Xavier. Big East basketball, about 5k undergrad, good business school, and it’s a Jesuit school like BC (if that matters). Cincinnati is a fun city.

Wouldn't it depend on the major? 25th percentile is 3.86, so 3.7 is a little low, but not horribly so. And that's the average. Maybe for some majors, the gpa's are lower? 1350 is above the median SAT score. https://research.schev.edu/enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.ASP

An SAT in the upper 1400's would put you well above the (1410) 75th percentile SAT, and a 4.10 would put you at the median GPA. How does that translate to "weight" list?

The title of the thread is a bit misleading. With the other information and APs, this is not a B- student. So the recommendations would be different it were truly a B- student with lower other stats and courses.
