Worst advice ever. Neither are guaranteed with a 3.7 weighted. Many surprise waitlists this year at JMU and VT always has the chance of being waitlisted. Don't be like some of my daughter's friends and only apply to one school and then having to scramble at the last minute to find out who is still taking applications when they get deferred and then waitlisted.

I agree, terrible advice, especially the suggestion to only apply to one. Insane!

Wow, no, agree with these PP. At our school there were kids with 1500 SAT and 3.9W GPA not getting in to VT. My own DS did not get in with 3.9W and 1440. And this was for poly sci not engineering.

I think there is much better luck with JMU.

if this is the case why arent kids doing two at NOVA with guaranteed admit---is a 3.5 gpa hard to get at nova for 1500 sat kids?

PP, I only changed my mind about Penn State because I thought he would find it too large. I think he'll get in. Go for it.

Go, Flyers! My son is a junior at Univ of Dayton. Received a lot of merit, which made it equal to the cost of an in-state school (we're in Maryland), very loyal alumni, and the basketball team was in the NCAA Tournament this year. And if he wants to participate in sports, there's a very active and varied intramural sports program.

Around 8,000 undergrads and a very nice and manageable campus.

Another Dayton parent here!
I hope OP's kid checks out Dayton! Op, if you can, take him for a visit when there is a basketball game. Tickets through the school are always sold out (there are a lot of VERY dedicated alumni fans!) but you can buy tickets through stubhub.

There is an airport in Dayton, about 20 minutes from the school, and there are direct flights to DCA and IAD each day.

Definitely tons of options in VA too:

CNU, VCU, UMW, Roanoke, ODU, Radford, Longwood, Randolph Macon, etc.

I think he will get into JMU. Maybe VT. I agree with the Syracuse suggestion. Toss in Penn State, St. Joe's and Temple.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I mean 3.7 weighted GPA. I don't think that is very strong for FCPS.

Thanks, like Syracuse, St Joe's, Providence. Anyone know Fairfield or Loyola Baltimore?

It's funny, OP, the very first school I thought of when I read your kid's numbers/interests was Fairfield. I know a few kids who go there and they love it. They think it's a nice school, they have fun, and have nice friends. Their business school is decent I think.

Def look at JMU - I know many young men with similar stats (including my own son) who went to JMU and thrived. It's a great place for late bloomers with a ton of school spirit and many well run clubs and activities.

OP your kid can do much better than ODU for sure. My kid has lower stats and we left ODU very unimpressed.

I'm not the pp who suggested ODU, but my kid has higher stats and we were actually very impressed with ODU when we toured in the fall of '22.
