B-student - suggestions for mid-size colleges?

Anonymous
My son is an average student at FCPS. Mostly Bs. OK rigor, more Honors than AP classes. Will probably end up with a 3.7 and maybe 6 or so APs. SAT likely around 1350 (taken once, will retake). Stronger in Math than humanities (will take BC Calc senior year kind of thing). Unsure about major: maybe statisitics, business, computer science (if at a less competitive school?). He has decent ECs, no awards or anything but loves his sport and has an interesting job. Very nice, very social, loves watching sports with friends kind of kid.

We are in VA and he likes JMU and we figure VA Tech is a longshot, but curious to look at smaller privates. Any suggestions of mid-size schools with fun rah-rah sports culture?? In my day in New England, kids like him could go to BC but today he has zero chance for that.

Thanks in advance.

This is a pretty decent list to start from.

Are you talking about 5-10K students?

I can think of some smaller LACs that might be a good fit.

Univ Dayton. Tons of merit, very loyal alumni, big sports school for basketball.

What about Radford? It’s close enough to VT that lots of students attend VT events.

Do those SLACs have a fun school-spirit sports scene?

Come on ... is a 3.7/1350 kid really even a B student? That's a very strong profile.

I think he will get into JMU. Maybe VT. I agree with the Syracuse suggestion. Toss in Penn State, St. Joe's and Temple.

I apologize -- I overlooked midsize. Keep Syracuse and St. Joe's, forget Temple and Penn State. Agree with Providence!

It is smaller - but Hobart just won the D3 men's ice hockey championship (for the 2nd time in 2 years). They also have a fantastic Women's soccer program.

My DD is interested in mid-sized schools as well and St. Joe's and Providence are on her list to visit.
