Worried about crime on campus

Actually, stay away from inner city schools.

In terms of students at risk of being victims of a violent crime, this is wrong. Many relatively rural college towns have way worse per capita violent crime rates against students than urban areas.

Must you flood every thread with your hate?

That's all they have. It must be a miserable existence to be a lib. Living with a false sense of moral superiority and preaching tolerance by continently maligning those that don't agree. So much anger.

Yes, leave the poor racist, anti-immigrant, homophobe insurrectionists in peace! Pointing out that their party is explicitly planning to institute Christian nationalism and that their nominee for president is gleefully planning “militarized mass deportations” (complete with concentration camps) is so hateful of those darn libs. Pointing out that their party recently invited a rabidly anti-gay hate crusader to lead prayers at the capitol is so intolerant of those pesky libs.

Your concern is legitimate, OP. Sexual assault, gun violence, frat hazing and petty crime are why campuses usually have their own security, blue light call boxes and safe buses that operate after hours.

Your best bet is to tour campus, ask hard questions and assess the vibe for yourself.

My kid is at George Washington. The campus is clean and has its own campus police and EMT (Georgetown does too, I understand). It feels safe, but I was a little concerned last fall when that alleged murderer escaped from the GW hospital and the campus went into shelter-in-place for a few hours. My son's only concern was that he couldn't go to the dining hall to eat at his usual time.

And then there was this,
These jackets are very expensive, and our community should be mindful while wearing them, even in very public spaces," the school said. WASHINGTON — Officials at George Washington University are warning the community after a string of robberies involving Canada Goose jackets.

Ok stealing an overpriced jacket is different than murder, rape, robbery. I would never spend $600 on a freaking coat.

This. Some risks can be reduced. Remind DC that their brain and those of their friends are still biologically immature and drawn to impulsive choices at a level they won't be in 15 years. If they won't listen, cast the conversation in the guise of "I know this isn't about you, but here's what you need to know in order to take care of your friends."

It's not all about avoiding being a victim of a crime, either. Make sure DC can recognize the basic layperson signs of alcohol poisoning or drug overdose, and that they know about Good Samaritan and other protections that should make them more likely to offer or ask for help. Make sure they know exactly what the emergency protocols are on their own campus beyond just 911 or 988 (the national suicide/crisis line), how to get help for themselves or a friend at the counseling center, where to go for medical treatment that is somewhere between the ER and the cold-n-flu aisle at Target, how to get a safe ride home if they are drunk or someone else is, and who to call for a middle-of-the-night crisis, whether their own or someone else's. Teach them to open their own drink at parties, watch their beverage at bars (hold it with the coaster over it!), and always travel in groups, even in an Uber.

And tell them that they can always, always call you if they encounter something they can't cope with, and you will do all that you can to help. Because you will. Even 30 years from now.

Inner cities are distressed urban and suburban areas of concentrated poverty and low income.
