Really bad prank?

OP with an update.

Just spoke to a sergeant about it. It wasn’t exactly “porn” as I was told that night. It was the equivalent of what you’d see above the waist in a Playboy magazine. They aren’t pursuing it further because the other family can’t think of any enemies, nor can we. They don’t think it was a child who sent it based on the writing. He didn’t have an answer as to why they chose to come to our house at 9pm on this matter and apologized for that.

I’m left even more confused lol I hope that’s the and of it and this girl doesn’t receive any more envelopes. I still don’t understand why anyone would return address the envelope at all unless the whole point of this was to get my DD into trouble, but we can’t imagine who. So weird.

Because of this outcome. Look at it this way. Adult sends inappropriate material to a minor but addresses it like another minor sent it. It gets looked into but nothing comes of it. Other family says just drop it. Creepy adult got away with sending the material

OP here. Right! But my thing is, how did they know my DD, and how do they also know this girl? Who could it have been? We have to be connected somehow.

Adding, the whole thing makes me feel gross.

Unfortunately, our kids' names are out there. For some reason my 9 year-old gets mail from Total Wine and Liquor. Why? I have absolutely no idea. Just somehow my kid's name got onto a list that got sold and sold again.

OP's story doesn't feel far-fetched to me, for all of those calling troll. The police didn't know that the person in the return address was an elementary schooler until they showed up, and it showed good judgement frankly to take the parent's word for it. I'm guessing this was just a dumb cruel prank from an older child, or that OP's child's name just got pulled at absolute random.

Actually, OP, maybe consider checking one of those Dark Web trackers for your child's name?

Thanks. I sort of just ignored them and moved on. I actually don’t know what the dark web tracker is, and I’m sort of scared to find out!

OP, I would write up the convo with the officer as well as with the local PD, then file away for possible future reference. If you have a lawyer or a level-headed lawyer friend, you may want to have a discussion about any other steps to take. Educate yourself on your state's porn/mail laws and Google if there have been any high profile cases, especially your local PD, so you know how they handle.

Finally, as per suggestions by some folks here, it makes sense to have the no holds barred convo (again) with your kid about what transpired here - "we know you said you did not do this, but we just want to cover again as this is so serious. As you will not get in trouble, please be totally honest with us," blah blah.

This incident may be random, but I wouldn't bank on it. Pay attention in case this comes back up - you want to make sure your DC is totally protected.

I'm a pretty chill person in nearly every facet of my life, yet I've worked enough in education spaces to know that this kind of stuff can be a lit match on fairly combustible terrain.

PP here - would love lawyers'/others' impressions on whether OP should send the write up to the local PD. On one hand, I'm pretty much "avoid putting something like that in writing" but on the other, if there is someone nefarious in the PD, I would want them to know you're paying attention.

No one under the age of 50 sends porn in the mail unless its a prank to get someone else in trouble.

This. Any actual pervs would probably be terrified of the ramifications of sending something like this through the mail. It does freak me out that the handwriting looked like an adult's though. You and this other child's family need to be vigilant in protecting your children. It's a good opportunity to have an updated conversation about the dangers that are out there and how to handle scary situations.

Unfortunately, I think this is the what happened.

Its some creep that gets off on sending this material to minors, and then a bonus is pulling another little girl into by having the police come to her house to talk about the explicit materials.

I don't know how you would even do this, but need to start considering what 3rd parties know both of these kids, since you mentioned they are from different communities

So to be clear, the envelope had your daughter's name and address as the return and another child's name and address as the recipient? So it has to be someone who knows both children, otherwise how on earth would they have been able to fill out both pieces of information? That ought to limit the suspects...

This has been answered over and over again. Why don't folks read before posting?

OP here. Yes. Written in ink in handwriting that is clearly not a 10yo’s: the girls name and address as the recipient, DD’s name and address in the upper left as the return.

This is what I can’t figure out. I asked the sgt I talked to if the parents wanted to communicate with me to figure out if we can find a common link, but he said they told him they didn’t want to pursue it further, which leads me to believe now that maybe THEY have an idea who it might be, and I’d love to know who!
