Given that it was adult porn, not child porn, and it is NOT illegal to put someone else's name and return and address on an envelope (unless it is part of some other underlying crime) I would say this was a low-level police call that would not warrant detective work or much of an investigation (although it does not hurt to call the pd and confirm).
Several years ago I had a strange visit from a detective and another officer. Not sure if it was a friend of my kid's (who was maybe 15 at the time) but someone had set up some kind of web-based voice mailbox online and managed to bill it to the city. It had been active for a couple of years until an auditor (or maybe just someone in city finance) questioned it. I had no idea, my son had no idea, they took our word for it and left. |
I get these handwritten, personal letters as well in the mail from JW & it freaks me out. Definitely weird. Your post does not read legit to me OP. It is just so beyond to me. If there is any ounce of truth to this story >> it is illegal to pose as a peace officer. I would try to find this guy. Stat. 👮🏻‍♀️👮🏻‍♂️ |
| I would hire a lawyer and get them involved. |

Your husband didn’t do it and your 10 year old didn’t either.
I’d consider thinking of people who have a grudge with you from work, school, church, sports. Then see if any of them could reasonably be connected to the other family. |
This seems like the most plausible scenario so far. Does any of this seem possible, OP? |
that's exactly what that "most difficult" poster was saying. |
Yeah, I was generally thinking along those lines. Law enforcement really doesn't have much of a problem of using their badge off hours. Still intrigued, though, on how they knew a kid lived there. |
I agree about that last part. Whatever return address was used, police could look up the adults that live there based on tax records, car registration, etc. but how would they know larla Smith was a 10-year-old girl who lived there? |
| I agree with the prior poster who said officer was trying to check something out perhaps for themselves or someone they know. The story was made up to check out you or your child for some reason. |
But how do they know about the child living there? That's what spooks me. |
He should have shrunk you his badge and given you a card with his name, contact and case number. I would call local police and report this and see if he is really a policeman. |
| The officer might have been lying about the other kid’s identity and location. Any chance your DD has an issue with a kid at school and this was that kid’s uncle, etc scoping out your DD and family? |
Yet the police station backed up the story and had a whole cover ready to go when the OP called? |
Yeah these guys missed a crucial detail |
| What a bizarre story! In theory, my 13 year old knows how to mail a letter. However, she doesn’t know where the envelopes are (in my office), or the stamps are (in my purse). She has only ever seen me mail things out at the post office, so doesn’t know you can do it from home. And honestly, that’s not how they communicate. If she wanted to harass someone, she will likely use social media like all the other young kids. |
