Agree on both counts. Jane Austens dialogue was perfection and the BBC dialogue captures it so well. Especially Lydia’s nonsense- the actress does it so well. “He’s threatened to dance with us all!” I was dying. Wedding scene was lame at the end. And sorry but BBC Jane wasn’t prettier than Elizabeth. But she captures the essence of Jane very well. |
I 1000% agree with PP about Wickham, and the PP who said 1995 Lydia was perfectly cast. And the secondary character who totally stole the 1995 version was the guy who played Mr. Collins! He was perfection, so smarmy and horrible and yet hilarious. Charlotte Lucas was also really well cast. My hot take on the 1995 vs 2005 P&P debate: girls who have warm, close relationships with their dad prefer the 2005 version, because a major feature is the relationship between keira knightly and donald sutherland. 1995, the focus is on Elizabeth overcoming her totally embarrassing family, and the dad is just this complete dolt who hides in the library. |
That’s complete nonsense. To the point that I question your intelligence for having written this comment. |
Colin Firth is the best! |
I’m a 36 year old English major who has read and reread Austen. I prefer the 2005 version—one of my favorites that I just adore. I can see the authenticity complaints, but I don’t “feel” them. I appreciate but do not love the BBC version. I think Jennifer Ehle is too old. And though I understand and find somewhat persuasive claim that Lizzie is SUPPOSED to be judgmental, I don’t think she’s supposed to actually be older than 21. I think Keira Knightley conveys the judgmental nature of youth well. I’m not at all persuaded that the 995 Jane is a beauty according to Edwardian standards, and even if she is I don’t think it makes it a better movie. I prefer MM’s awkward, ardent Darcy. |
Also—for Austen heads, I strongly recommend the Anya Taylor Joy Emma. |
Agreed! |
Firth/Ehle for when I want the whole P&P experience. In that version you get more social commentary, more family relationship stuff, etc.
Knightley/MacFadyen for when I want a quick fix, heavy on the romance. |
Jane's appearance is oddly the thing I dislike most about BBC P&P. The fact that she is just not more attractive than Lizzie (at least how she is styled) makes it hard for me to suspend my disbelief since her being more beautiful than Elizabeth is such an important element of the novel. Of course that's a small quibble, and I do generally prefer the BBC version. |
I am befuddled by the constant discussion of this topic by some women, is this your Roman Empire? Criminy! |
No, the roman empire is my roman empire. But these are great movies, so yeah, they will be discussed. |
It’s dumb to compare a miniseries vs. a movie. They are both great. I watched both in October while recovering from wisdom teeth removal. Both amazing, both completely different given the amount of time allotted and the amount of ground able to be covered. |
Our Roman Empire is talking about men who think they’re smart and cultured but behave like children |
The BBC miniseries is the best with the best Darcy and Elizabeth. BUT the newer movie had the best Charlotte Lucas by far. Her “don’t you dare judge me” speech really elevated the entire story. |
I really liked it! |
