Quick poll on Pride and Prejudice

The “pretty” sister in the Firth version really isn’t pretty.

The dialogue in the Firth version is more accurate, and closer to the book.

The Knightly version has better scenery, music, costume, and chemistry.

If only they could marry the two, but the film would be like 3.5 hours long.

Let’s see if there’s an age demographic driving this.

I’m 49, and I prefer the Keira version. It’s beautifully filmed. The music is lovely. The acting feels more authentic. And the chemistry is smoldering.

The Firth version is a cross between watching a play (stilted; feels obviously fake and stuffy) and Little House on the Prairie (modern actors struggling to pull off the costumes and dialogue). Plus, no chemistry. The best acting in this version is Lydia—she’s a natural.

I'm the ardent admirer of Firth. Also 49. I think there are heaps of chemistry.

She's pretty for 1813!

That’s because Firth exudes something romantic in every film. But she just comes across as stiff.

NP. Gen X here. I like Colin Firth but I agree the chemistry was much better in the Knightley/Macfadyen version. There was no chemistry in the BBC version. The BBC version was more historically accurate.

If I want to watch a reasonably accurate period drama I watch the BBC version. If I want to watch something with romance, chemistry, and a bit of fantasy, I watch the Knightley/Macfadyen version.

No question. Colin Firth.

Keira & Matthew hands down! I’ve recommended it to many people since it came out and everyone has enjoyed it.

It’s distracting having Jane not be beautiful since everyone is always commenting on her beauty.

I have watched both though more times than I care to admit.

The casting was wonderful.

Firth/ehle

Kiera would have been a decent Emma but is too bubbly for that role

Firth version hands down. The 2005 Kiera version is not very true to the book other than the general plot. And so much is not true to the period- like Kiera running around with her hair down? Chickens walking through the Bennett house? The Bennets were the Bingleys social superiors, they just didn’t have the income anymore.

The Firth version in my opinion had WAY more chemistry between Firth and Ehle! And it was so much more true to the book. Firth is what made the movie though.

Agree that the Firth version’s Jane was not pretty enough for the role even though she played the part perfectly

I liked KK's movies at the time they came out, but looking back now, her acting style feels misplaced in a period piece. She has a spirited youth/pixie dream girl thing going on (like a 1990s British version of 1980s Winona Ryder). I know Elizabeth Bennett was spirited for the times, but KK felt too modern. Just my take.

Agree. Did not like the KK version. And I don't find McFadyen handsome. Unable to appreciate anything else due to the pairing.
