1995 BBC version. Forever. |
Firth/Ehle. I don’t love KK as Elizabeth, although MM is fantastic and i agree with a PP who said Rosamond Pike/Brenda Blethyn/Donald Sutherland/Judi Dench are all fantastic. |
1995 Jane?!? She’s the epitome of beauty in the Jane Austen era!!! Gosh, you people don’t know anything. OP, it’s not a demographic issue. It’s who has background knowledge of the period and who doesn’t. Who has read the book and wants to hear it aloud snd who doesn’t. Who appreciates theater style of acting and who prefers movie style of acting. Who understands stiff-upper lip a l’anglaise and wants ultra-emo a l’américaine. Basically it’s purists vs rednecks. |
I just think the 1995 Lydia was amazing. She was too old for the role but her acting was perfection. |
Also 1995 Wickham was perfection too. 2005 Wickham had such a minor role and didn’t capture the simpering perpetual victim that 1995 Wickham did. |
I really don’t see Elizabeth Bennett swinging on a muddy tire swing with her hair down in a dirty dress being yelled at by charlotte Lucas. That whole scene made me cringe. |
Keira’s version was a rom com. 1995 version was the book. |
yes and romcoms are more entertaining. |
For you. |
Disagree. I read the book. And I felt the bbc version was too stuffy and lacked the passion I wanted to see onscreen. The bbc Jane is too masculine looking. Ehle was more a beauty of that time: more petite with a small, soft face. |

The “pretty” sister in the Firth version really isn’t pretty.
She's pretty for 1813!
It’s distracting having Jane not be beautiful since everyone is always commenting on her beauty.
1995 Jane?!? Ehle was the prettier sister by far. |
Colin Firth keeps showing up in romcoms. |
55 here and I'm a huge fan of both. I'm physically pained by the freelanced dialogue in the Keira version, how dare they mess with the original language. But I also hate the BBC ending (a double wedding, GMAFB.)
|
I would have loved to see a wedding in the movie. |
