It's so curious how you always show up on threads about shows you find "beneath you." When I don't like a show, I skip any discussion of it. Not you though! ![]() |
Exactly. I HATED Schitt's Creek, and tried so hard to get into it. Awful. But I loved The Leftovers so much - some of the best TV I've ever seen - and I know a lot of people hated that. So... |
Season 1 has the best writing.
One theme of season 1 is about how people delude themselves and compromie. Some interesting conversations which bring up surprises and inconvenient truths; for instance, Alexandria Daddario's conversation with Connie Britton about the article she wrote. It's satirical and the people are not likeable. I didn't like season 2. I'm enjoying season 3 but I don't think it's as good as season 1. I do really like many of the actors and think they're giving amazing performances. The three women are very funny. |
Rubbish! Rubbish, I tell you! --a nitwit prole |
I have never posted about a show before. You must be beyond stupid to think that you can positively identify a single poster on an anonymous message board. I guess that explains why you find White Lotus intellectually stimulating. ![]() |
Riiiiiight... Nice try! |
I love White Lotus but felt the same way about Schitts Creek. A lot of people I knew raved about it so I really tried to get into it because it's fun to be into the same shows your friends and family are watching. I just couldn't do it. Yet I really enjoyed White Lotus from the jump. I think it's funny and interesting and I like how it shows aspects of relationships that don't get depicted onscreen very often. Like I liked that the newlyweds in S1 focused on her discovering he has this really problematic character trait (incredibly petty and thin skinned) and realizing she kind of rushed into this marriage, and having to figure out how to deal with that. Or how in S2 there were the two guys who had been friends since college and had this subtle rivalry that was now complicated by the "beta" friend suddenly becoming very, very rich. I just find that stuff thought provoking because those nuanced situations rarely get featured in a TV show -- usually relationships are drawn more broadly than that. It reminded me of how some of my favorite books portray very complicated relationships between multidimensional people. And then in addition to that, I find the show really laugh out loud funny sometimes. So just enjoyable all around. Whereas Schitt's Creek, which was actually written as a comedy, never made me laugh. But again, lots of people whose opinions I respect love that show. Different strokes for different folks. |
I agree on SATC, which I found deeply unrealistic about both dating and female friendships -- a strange fantasy. But Mike White is a thoughtful observer of relationships, marriages, kids and families. He has a really interesting background and upbringing, which I think is a big part of it. His dad was an evangelical preacher who came out as gay, late in life. White was actually one of the first people to learn his dad was gay, because he read some of his dad's journals as a kid. Later on, White watched his dad come out publicly, and the impact on his career as a preacher and relationships with people from the evangelical community. Then also watching his parents divorce over this (amicably) and then his dad beginning to date men in midlife. I think through all of this, Mike White was observing how everyone in his family and community reacted to these events, with curiosity and not judgment. Growing up in a family with those kind of dramatic shifts in relationships and identity, but still retaining a loving, supportive family (from the sound of it) I think helped White develop his style as a filmmaker and storyteller, where he is often looking for the raw truth at the heart of a relationship, underneath what people might say or present to the world publicly, but he isn't judgmental or shaming about it. His show Enlightened has a similar outlook to White Lotus but, IMO, a much more optimistic tone. Also he is able to dive in deeper on the characters because it's focused on one woman and then the handful of people in her orbit, instead of a large and varied ensemble whose stories only overlap in minimal ways. |
It’s a soap opera full of smut filmed in pretty places. Acting as if it’s high brow and you “get it” because you’re so high caste and live such decadent life is hilarious. It’s not “prestige TV,” it’s gutter trash literally full of lying, drugs, sexual deviancy, prostitution, profanity, and various smut. |
So just watch Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, you sanctimonious prat. |
+100 Well said! I feel exactly the same way. |
+1 I had forgotten about Mike White's dad - did you ever watch them compete as a team on The Amazing Race? |

Me too! And I adore all of the actors, I love watching clips of the show. But I just CAN'T watch the whole series. Glad to know it's not just me. |
I mean, you say potato, I say pot"ah"to. I don't really choose my show by whether or not it's "prestige TV." Do you? |
