Technically, yes. Is Kristi Yamaguchi “American”? Is Nikki Haley American? They were born here, right? In the US, most people assume everybody from Africa must look the same way. Is an American with Morrocan ancestry, not African? This , in my view, is one reason why we are often the laughing stock of the international community. Oh, and don’t get me started on why citizens of the US are called “Americans”, yet when a Mexican calls him/herself American, all hell breaks loose! |
If students are lying about their racial/ethnic background or if this is because of people who don’t “look” their race (white Latinos, etc.), why aren’t we seeing similar demographics at other top schools? Harvard and Yale are closer to 40% white. Much lower % of Blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans than Hopkins. Seems strange that people would only lie to get into Hopkins! |
Good to see they have an incoming class that looks more like America.
Oh, wait. |
And since white male doctors have been shown on many studies to bring biases that negatively impact the health of women of color, that means taking diversity into account when building a medical school class is critical. Unless you only care about white males, of course. |

We would all need real data in larger quantities than publicly available to analyze this intelligently. As a thought experiment, one might wonder if those biracial kids who believe that emphasizing one side of their heritage would help with admission, would check the box for their non-white family origin. In my Gen X professional grad school educated circles, there are many families of mixed heritage. All high-attaining families but from grad schools that are not quite HYPSM level. One level down in school ranking if you are the kind of person that thinks that matters a lot. It seems very reasonable to me that children from these kinds of families would both target and be accepted at schools like JHU. And this could occur without diluting applicant or student quality. |
5 Ivies have studies that show TO kids that did not submit scores (4 year study) are the ones filling the remedial courses and on academic probation. Many HSs hugely inflated grades, particularly during Covid, and many have not gone back. |
Hopkins undergrad in policy and economics is very, very strong. You can also do the 5-year program with SAIS (one of the best International studies program). People wrongly associate JHU only with STEM. |
NP. JHU absolutely recruits across multiple sports. I know kids recruited to teams that aren’t lacrosse or fencing. |
The next Harvard. |
Agree. The huge push of DEI over the past 5-8 years and anti-legacy. |
+1 I’m amazed by the ignorance out there. |
That is because he is. He is of African decent and is now an American. Whether he identifies as black, is another matter. |
I graduated a few years ago. My name is actually Italian but a lot of people think it is Hispanic. I checked Hispanic on the application. No one ever "investigated" me. |
So you lied to get a perceived advantage because you weren't confident of your own record and ability to make a strong case for your fit to major? So how were your JHU grades? I hope you're not my doctor or personal wealth advisor or not even real at all (under-bridge-dweller). |
