If students are lying about their racial/ethnic background or if this is because of people who don’t “look” their race (white Latinos, etc.), why aren’t we seeing similar demographics at other top schools? Harvard and Yale are closer to 40% white. Much lower % of Blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans than Hopkins. Seems strange that people would only lie to get into Hopkins!
💯
We would all need real data in larger quantities than publicly available to analyze this intelligently. As a thought experiment, one might wonder if those biracial kids who believe that emphasizing one side of their heritage would help with admission, would check the box for their non-white family origin. In my Gen X professional grad school educated circles, there are many families of mixed heritage. All high-attaining families but from grad schools that are not quite HYPSM level. One level down in school ranking if you are the kind of person that thinks that matters a lot. It seems very reasonable to me that children from these kinds of families would both target and be accepted at schools like JHU. And this could occur without diluting applicant or student quality.
