I call bs. |
Like what specifically? I’ve had kids at two different Florida campuses for the last three years. Very little has changed IMO but I’m open to hearing about it. From people who actually know and not from what they “hear”. I honestly can’t think of one thing with regards to their day to day living that has changed, or the requirements for their majors or university policies. I’m no fan of Florida politics but there are a lot of posters who are unreasonably dramatic (including the OP with this post). |
A LOT has changed according to DCUMers who went to Disney once on vacation and have no experience with FL schools but have some sort of sick obsession with hating DeSantis. I’m not a fan of him either but man does Florida live rent free in some of y’all’s heads. |
Test scores are low for a supposedly “top” flagship in a TO world. Both UVA and WM are 32-34 ACT. Can’t comment on GPA because 4.4-4.6 is really high for most DMV school systems and very out of whack with the SAT/ACT spread. You’d need to know how they weight and whether everyone with a pulse gets an A in every AP. |
Like this: https://www.tampabay.com/news/education/2023/05/15/desantis-new-college-higher-education-sb266-christopher-rufo-critical-race-theory-gender-major-changes-legislation-indoctrination/ If your kid really is in a FL State college, you should pay more attention to the fact that grown ass adults are not allowed to discuss certain topics in a college classroom. Elimination of tenure and firing of professors who allow said discussions. The STOP WOKE Act, etc. agree or disagree, this is a huge scaling back of traditional academic freedom at the college level. How can you send a kid to a school and not be aware of such massive policy shifts being enacted into law? |
We live in the state and have for our lifetimes. Applications at every school public or private are up; this is wishful thinking. |
This. The DCUM crowd loves to bash Florida, but they also love to vacation there. Anyone with any sense, including everyone in the Northeast and Ohio, are moving there. |
You do realize that Florida is a top 10 school unlike UMD. Florida is running in the ranks of Michigan and UNC. UMD could never. Florida is also higher ranked than any other college in Virginia other than UVA. Where do you people get this stuff? You just spew lies and try to get everyone to believe it when the facts are very clear to anyone who does any research. Wishful babbling, I guess. |
Oh, no. The nameless, faceless, liberal, unnamed corporation on DCM is no longer hiring Florida grads! |

I am very close with someone who just retired from a top post at UF. They were there for decades and weathered a lot of political stuff without a lot of angst but was pretty unhappy with the level of interference with the academics in the last year or two. They have a number of colleagues that were quietly slipping away rather than deal with it. No one wants to be vocal about it because of the risk of backlash against their department or the university generally so they just retire or look for a position elsewhere, or try to keep their head down and hope it will pass. I think what DeSantis did to Disney probably didn’t really help — if he’ll retaliate like that against Disney, what hope does a professor at a state university have? Better to keep your mouth shut. There’s already some view that UF is viewed as too liberal or elitist within Florida political circles so they would like to move state money to other institution.
I think it’s a great school but there’s definitely reason to be concerned, particularly if this is the start of a trend and not just something that DeSantis was doing because he thought he has a shot at the presidency. |
Lol someone thinks college rankings are relevant |
| God forbid that liberal children are exposed to viewpoint diversity in FL. They might turn MAGA down there. |
+1 What is the pp even talking about? |
No. Gainesville is definitely sunnier and more expensive than Tuscaloosa. |
He's not gonna leave his wife for you. She's hot. |
