Are FL admissions easier now bc liberals are avoiding the state?

They’ve been conservative forever. When Michigan and Pennsylvania went for Trump, did that negatively impact apps to UMichigan or Penn or CMU or Swarthmore? People flood Duke and UNCCH and Davidson. Why do you think Florida is somehow the one place people would avoid going because of its politic?

Yes. FL is different from the other places mentioned because MI and NC and VA and even Alabama and TX let the Board of Governors do their job and the colleges may reflect the political leanings of the state, but for the most part college specific professors, departments, subjects, tenure, etc aren’t being targeted to score political points. DeSantis is making major changes based solely on politics and culture wars. Politics and culture wars and red vs blue is everywhere. It’s nice that most states can keep it it of state college administration by having Boards of Governors with rolling terms.

Florida has become so attractive to young people that even formerly backyard commuter schools with open enrollment line UCF and USF have become highly selective. Last I checked both had acceptance rates in the 35-40% range. I expect to see FAU and FGCU become more competitive in the next few years, as well. And then there's New College in Sarasota, the erstwhile woke cesspool that was near bankruptcy with a dwindling enrollment. SJWs went nuts when Captain Ron decided to reform it into a respectable institute of higher learning. Well, New College just enrolled its largest freshman class ever this fall. Ignore the haters. Florida higher education is thriving.

+1. UF is a great school. DD accepted. Thriving.

We have Bright Futures. Florida families love sending their kids to Florida colleges as tuition is free.

Why would Florida admissions be easier.

There are hundreds of applications for each position open at a Florida institution.

Florida college admissions are less competitive as no out-of-state, high stats kids are interested. Why pay for a lackluster, third tier education? Should make it somewhat easier for in-state applicants.

As a Mother of 4 daughters who are currently in middle and high school I am paying close attention to abortion and emergency gynaecology service access in red states and would seriously dissuade them from applying to schools where their health maybe in danger. College kids will behave as college kids have always done, including me, and I fully support legal young adults being able to do so. I want my girls to be to access the morning after pill in case of rape, get IUDs and other contraception’s and get proper treatment for ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage without fear.

Only the loud, annoying liberals are avoiding Florida. That is actually a benefit for a lot of people, including their fellow quieter, saner liberals. FL is getting harder to admit, not easier.

It would give me serious pause. Florida’s education system as a whole is on a dangerous trajectory (even removing dictionaries from elementary school libraries under their book bans).

Florida alumna. Parents live in Fl. Oldest was picking between UF honors and another school a few years ago. This year, with the grandparent waiver, should have been even more attractive for my youngest (DD). She had zero interest in applying and I had zero interest in encouraging her to apply.

Conversely, an equal number of people are likely becoming fed up with the whole DEI/woke/increasingly antisemitic bent of the leftist-controlled schools, which would balance any possible application effect.

Same here as mother of 2 daughters. If this makes me a wacko nutjob that I actually care about reproductive freedom, women's rights, and everything DeSantis is railing against, so be it. Plenty of other good schools to choose from.

Any insight?

From what I’m seeing, plenty of northerners are flocking to southern schools—including SEC universities.

What are you seeing in the latest round of applications and admissions?

Not sure but given how DeSantis and company destroyed the New School and their general fascist approach to education, I would discourage my child from attending school in Florida, particularly given the fact that it might lead to employment and life in Florida and no one wants that

The reason northerners "avoid" Florida colleges is that with the exceptions of UF and maybe Florida State for NMS they always have better and cheaper choices in their home state.

It's not a political, religious, or ethically based choice. No matter how much you trolls wish it were.

The number one reason kids from the north DO choose a Florida college is the same reason everyone who moves to Florida does: the weather.

Cost is a major factor too.

DS is a junior and lots of kids looking at FL. I do t think the politics antes into their decision.

• don’t think politics enter into their decision.

There were people on here last year who were obsessed with avoiding Texas and other states because little Zelda and Phoebe would not be able to get their abortions until Christmas or spring break. Yet it did not at all hurt the application numbers of schools in states that restricted abortions. It is hard for some people here to understand that many others think and value differently than they do and are not trolling when they express said views.
