VA Tech Releasing Some Decisions at 5 pm Today

Anonymous
My kid had no answer today, but I think it was top 25% of total admissions in each department or major. I think it’s good for VT to try and encourage students that it feels are valued. I’m not offended by colleges getting aggressive for what’s valuable to them.

EA decisions in late February?!

Late February doesn't seem very EA'ish :

Definitely but it's been like this for several years

My kid has now mentally taken VT off their list and moving on to other acceptances and merit age.

Getting the email without the acceptance is clearly a precurser to the rejection letter.

why do you say that? they sent out 25% of their offers. this means 75% to go. what am i missing?

This is totally absurd. Get ahold of yourself for your DC sake.

Some good replies here but some people need to chill. Given the yield rate, likely 80%-90% of the class has yet to be filled.

I suspect this is more competition-based. Meaning not that the first group is stronger but to just get out answers sooner.

Remember, you have other state schools already communicating such as Georgia, Ohio State, and others that include some cross-apply schools. I consider this a positive when schools are competing for our students.

It's possible, but runs contrary to the info in the email. What are you basing this opinion on? The "hold my beer" comment was hysterical and spot on.

I am basing it the fact that not all ED applicants received the initial email. Only a portion of ED applicants received the initial email.

Then within the email group, only some students received an acceptance. The rest, nothing.

I think the portion of ED kids who received the 1st email are the applicants that VT already made a decision on. Some were accepted. The kids who did not get an acceptance but did receive the 1st email are likely rejections, in my opinion. They have a decision, but not one VT wants to share before the holidays, while VT is happy to share the good news with accepted kids. To me, no follow up contact = a rejection that will arrive after January 1st.

If it is not a rejection, then why did only some ED applicants receive the initial email? The only thing that makes sense is that those ED applicants (all of them) who received the email have a finalized decision. It is just that VT only followed up with the kids who were receiving good news.

This is not ED. It's EA. And they clearly said they were releasing decisions in batches. Why are some of you assuming it's a rejection if you didn't hear back yet? They haven't gotten through all of the apps yet.

Why are you assuming a rejection?

Many of those kids in the 25% will have offers from great universities that they will accept. Or financial aid/merit. Or a yes from an instate like MD.

I agree about not being freaked out, but many of these kids will be accepting as VT is their top choice.

+1
The overreactions here are something else. This doesn't sound unlike rolling admission. This is also VT's first year with only EA (no ED), so they probably got way more apps in this one round than they were expecting. They really should have kept ED.

My neighbor texted me earlier with the news that her daughter was accepted for National Security/Foreign Affairs. So excited for her!!

The point is that VT has created all this speculation. Ok, so they send 25% acceptances during the 'EA' round. But why send an email to others and no email to others. My DS got an email and no acceptance and it's so unnerving and leading to all this speculation to calm ourselves down. Why not just tell us straight up?!

Unless they also got into UVA or wherever else they actually want to go. They may have applied to VT as a safety (I know, "VT is not anybody's safety".. is backup better?). Once we know the breakdown between OOS and In-state, we can analyze this better. How many OOS kids do you think will enroll?

I think VTech should have been clear who the initial letter (letting people know that some acceptances would be sent at 5) was sent to. If it was emailed to ALL EA applicants everyone would feel better. It sounds like that email may NOT have gone to EA applicants, which of course makes those who didn't get a 5 pm notice assume their application HAS been reviewed and put in a reject or defer pile.

Also, the letter was poorly written. Not impressed. And I noted that the letter said that accepted students shouldn't expect their packet in the mail until LATE February? WTH? Is VTech known to have a poorly run Admissions Dept?

I thought the first email went to ALL applicants. Only the 25% admitted students got the second email. Are you saying not everyone got the first email?
