Marylanders: Did you regret not choosing Virginia when it came time to apply to college?

Congrats to Umd on the new world university rankings!!!! I have to admit, I had no idea that UMD has had such a profound impact on life in the US. I mean right now I am wearing Under Armour!!! I used Google like 20 times today!!! My Dad has an implanted defibulator!!! I just read about Katy Perry on the Muppets like 20 inutes ago!!! Seinfeld is my favorite show. I watched the weather report at 10:00 and they had doppler radar. Jeez!!!!! what is it about that place that inspires such genius???? and why is there nothing from Uva or VT...there's got to be something!!!! right??? If there isn't there is definately something not right about those places!!! not to mention I had the universal price code used today at CVS!!!! WOW

It's basically viewed as: (1) not as good as Virginia Tech, much less U.Va; (2) full of kids from New Jersey and New York who couldn't get into the top SUNY schools or Rutgers; (3) full of hooligans who riot after any significant athletic event; and (4) located in an exceptionally dumpy part of the DC region, with none of the atmosphere that one would desire from a college town. Hopkins is better, but it's a niche school for pre-professionals, rather than a well-rounded liberal arts school, and it's also located near a dangerous part of Baltimore.

Yes, Montgomery County has some nice suburbs, and less congestion than NoVa, but from an educational standpoint Maryland is basically flyover territory.
Actually the world university rankings have just been published.... Hopkins #17 Maryland #104 UVa #130 VT #340.....OH SNAP!!!!! US News has Hopkins #13 Uva #25 Umd #56 and Vt #69 I probably shouldn't mention that USNA Annapolis destroys all of them. But lets face it. Virginia Tech really sucks. Are you aware that VT has zero national championships in any sports? I mean Maryland has 37 national championships. Uva only has 19 but thats still alot better than virginia tech. Also Umd Grads invented google, the muppets, seinfeld, the wire, doppler radar, the octane system, linear programming, underarmour, launched sirus satellite, syndicated baywatch, broke watergate, created Boondocks, artificial pancreas, the universal price code, implanted defibulator, miniture insulin pumps, the jumbotron, frequent flyer systems, the octane system. Uva has has made zero contribution to modern life but does have some lawyers and polititians but no geniuses like Maryland. And Maryland Lacrosse players have won 10 national championships without murdering anybody! VT on the other hand.....is a tech school and has made no contributions of note to society and I'm not even going to bring up campus tradgedies.

At least UVA grads can spell.

That's kind of what the point is...Uva grads max out at spelling, while Umd grads pursue genius, changing the course of this great country in absolutely astounding frequency.

DCer here so I don't really care about whether MD or VA schools are better but I just met with dd's college counselor last week and he told us that Rutgers would be a safety school for her while College Park would be a stretch. I think, pp, you are living in the past.

Yeah, maybe Rutgers-Camden.

Teenagers can be very vulnerable and I've already seen the damage that occurs when a young person comes face to face with prejudice and hatred. And now Tyler Clementi kills himself one month into his freshman year after his roommate put a video of him having sex with a man on the web. Like I said, I have to know that a school will protect my child. Queer teens are not adults and they have a higher rate of suicide than straight teens. I don't expect them to be as comfortable as adults in working and living in hostile environments.

You're sending your daughter off to college, not kindergarten. What happened at Rutgers with Tyler Clementi could just as easily have happened at a school in Maryland (or Virginia) as in New Jersey.

This is true. Think of the poor students massacred at virginia tech and the awful murder at Uva. Umd has avoided these disasters and hopefully can keep up the good work.

USNA: not a MD-state school. It is a US military academy. Tuition does not vary with your state of residence.

Hopkins: not a MD-state school. It is a private university. Tuition does not vary with your state of residence.

So what was you point? You think UMD is better than VA Tech. Probably depends on the kid and the kid's interests.

I live in DC, so I don't have a dog in this fight. But even if I lived in MD or VA, I would prefer that my DC go to college more than 2 hours away from home. I think it is healthy to leave the nest and experience different parts of the country.

I also think parents should not discount private colleges and universities. Some of them are able to give incredible financial aid, making them less expensive than some in-state tuition. Food for thought.

Umd ahead of UVA in world rankings . Hopkins recieves tons of state aid.

Tech is just sad. No need to bully but they have a long way to go

Terrible incidents, but most students still feel safer at U.Va, W&M, JMU and Virginia Tech than they do in the dumpy, depressing College Park area. And I seem to recall U. Md thought it was a disaster when Len Bias OD'd.

an OD is a far cry from a mass murder/grizzly murder. Plus thats ancient history that actually alerted the entire US about the dangers of drug use since Lenny was so beloved. Also people may "feel" one way or another the fact is students aren't murduring at UMD.

We need more Univerisities to graduate innovators like Umd has in order to save our economy. Umd cannot continue to do this all by itself!

Did someone get killed by a bear at Va. Tech? That I haven't heard! Tell more, please.
