I don't consider St. Marys to be elite. |
The only schools that are Elite are Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Hopkins, Stanford thats about it. |
Sure it's not Dartmouth or Wellesley but it is one of only 5 public colleges included in US News and World Report's top 100 liberal arts colleges in the country. BTW, am not a St. Mary's grad or employee but am interested in it for dd. |
I posted the elite comment tongue-in-cheek, sorry.
I love St. Mary's. Beautiful campus. My sister went there, loved it. Great place to learn to sail too. |
Yale? Cal Tech? Duke? |
Okay! Got it! |
Yale yes... Duke no...Cal Tech borderline. |
This is clearly written by someone who has only superficial understanding of the elite--you know, the ones who aspire to owning a McMansion in formerly farm country. Those "in the know" would say that certainly Yale, the U of C (for the truly intellectual), as well as several of the highly selective liberal arts colleges (Wellesley, Bryn Mawr, Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore) are more prestigious than Hopkins. Also, the West Coast elite would prefer Stanford, Cal Tech, Berkeley, Pomona, and Reed over some of the East Coast institutions. In the South, one would look at UVa (not to revive that dead horse), Duke, Davidson, Rice, William and Mary. BTW, when we're talking about graduate schools, the list changes. Penn (Wharton) for B-school is added to the list, but not for undergrad. Hopkins, I would argue, is far more prestigious for its medical school, rather than undergrad. And don't forget West Point. |
Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford are straight out elite. MIT elite math/physical sciences. Hopkins eilite Medical. All others are easier and less essential to the United States. |
The service academys are also essential with the highest ranking USNA Annapolis. Wow, Maryland is home to 2 of the 9 institutions essential to the Unite States. |
No, I don't regret it. My DC from Maryland might even have a better chance at getting into UVA or W&M than all those residents in NOVA. |
Well 1/3 come from out of state, but they typically pay full tuition and must meet or exceed the entrance criteria for in-state students. Your best bet is to move about 100 miles out of Nova or Richmond before your dc's senior year. The more rural the location, the better. |
In case this hasn't appeared on this site yet, here is a link to the WSJ Top 25 Recruiter Picks. UMD is #8 with the following dept. rankings: Engineering (3), Accounting (7), Computer Science (10), Business/Economics (21). UVA is tied for #19 with NC State with the following ranking: Business/Economics (9).

from your link: #1 was Penn State, a school known for its rampant alcohol culture. #2 was Texas A&M. The Aggies? ![]() |
Something seriously flawed with that poll. Cornell was #14???? Impossible. no one in their right mind would send their kid to UMD before Cornell (if he or she could get in). before UMD. |
