fun facts...Umd graduates invented the octane system, incription machines that broke the German codes and were precursers to modern commputers, Linear programming, pulse dopplar radar, The Muppets, The Jumbotron, Artificial pancreas, the miniturized insulin pump, the implanted defibulator, Broke Watergate, Created Seinfeld, Syndicated Baywatch, developed frequent flyer programs, created Boondocks, Founded Underarmour, Created Google, Lunched sirius satellite, The Universal Price Bar Code, created curb your entusiasm, Uva invented the beer launching fridge. Look it up. its pitiful. Umd has 37 national championships. Uva has 17

Go Terps. Did Maryland dominate Duke in the same manner?
Anonymous
Absolutely. Duke has basically contributed nothing to society. No inventions. They did give us Richard Nixon but fortunately a Maryland Grad uncovered watergate and got him impeached. I'm not even going to bring up the Lacrosse team.

Wow..Thats amazing. I'm looking at that list of Umd acomplishments and good grief without them modern culture would be drastically different! No Baywatch! No large screen stadium Tv's, No Seinfeld or Muppets? No Universal Bar Code? No Doppler radar? No Under Armour? No GOOGLE? No Watergate? Wow....Just Wow. what is is about Umd that fosters these geniuses?
Anonymous
I don't know but I went Through the entire ACC conference schools on GOOGLE. And I found that UMD has had a greater impact on modern life in the USA than BC,UVA,VT,UNC, Duke, WF,NCstate, Clemson, GT, Miami and FSU combined....and its not even close!!!!

A UMD grad also created "the Wire"....Umd corners quality TV ...Seinfeld stc...

Additionally Uva lax....4 national championships. UMD lax 10 national championships (and no murders)

Maryland....f-yeah! are the other schools even trying?

This is absolutely false; many of the non-TJ high schools in Fairfax and Arlington regularly send 15-30 grads to U.Va each year.

Tried to get my kid to look at Virginia schools because they offer a lot but she did not want to go to school in a state where it is illegal for gays to recreate some of the benefits of marriage by using legal agreements. Then the governor argued that state universities should not include gays in non-discrimination policies and the AG started investigating a respected professor's research on climate change. I have to say that after that I decided maybe she was right.

Too bad. I used to teach in Virginia and there are some great schools there but I have to know my child will be protected wherever she goes to school and I no longer have confidence that the Commonwealth of Virginia has her best interests in mind.

Not saying you should let that determine your decision, especially when Virginia schools are so good. But given that my kid is bi, it's much more central to our decision-making. Good luck with your decision!

There are plenty of gays and lesbians living in Virginia and working to change the laws.

Sometimes that's what working for civil rights is all about. It's not always about surrounding yourself with people who think exactly the same way you do.

The AG is an embarassment, but I think Virginia's universities - much stronger than those in Maryland and many other states - will survive.

You often hear Maryland residents discussing how out-of-state students fare at U.Va or W&M. You never hear Virginia residents discussing how out-of-state students fare at U. Md. It's basically viewed as: (1) not as good as Virginia Tech, much less U.Va; (2) full of kids from New Jersey and New York who couldn't get into the top SUNY schools or Rutgers; (3) full of hooligans who riot after any significant athletic event; and (4) located in an exceptionally dumpy part of the DC region, with none of the atmosphere that one would desire from a college town. Hopkins is better, but it's a niche school for pre-professionals, rather than a well-rounded liberal arts school, and it's also located near a dangerous part of Baltimore.

Yes, Montgomery County has some nice suburbs, and less congestion than NoVa, but from an educational standpoint Maryland is basically flyover territory.

I don't disagree with this but I'm not going to tell a 17-year-old she has to do that. Teenagers can be very vulnerable and I've already seen the damage that occurs when a young person comes face to face with prejudice and hatred. And now Tyler Clementi kills himself one month into his freshman year after his roommate put a video of him having sex with a man on the web. Like I said, I have to know that a school will protect my child. Queer teens are not adults and they have a higher rate of suicide than straight teens. I don't expect them to be as comfortable as adults in working and living in hostile environments.

Actually the world university rankings have just been published.... Hopkins #17 Maryland #104 UVa #130 VT #340.....OH SNAP!!!!! US News has Hopkins #13 Uva #25 Umd #56 and Vt #69 I probably shouldn't mention that USNA Annapolis destroys all of them. But lets face it. Virginia Tech really sucks. Are you aware that VT has zero national championships in any sports? I mean Maryland has 37 national championships. Uva only has 19 but thats still alot better than virginia tech. Also Umd Grads invented google, the muppets, seinfeld, the wire, doppler radar, the octane system, linear programming, underarmour, launched sirus satellite, syndicated baywatch, broke watergate, created Boondocks, artificial pancreas, the universal price code, implanted defibulator, miniture insulin pumps, the jumbotron, frequent flyer systems, the octane system. Uva has has made zero contribution to modern life but does have some lawyers and polititians but no geniuses like Maryland. And Maryland Lacrosse players have won 10 national championships without murdering anybody! VT on the other hand.....is a tech school and has made no contributions of note to society and I'm not even going to bring up campus tradgedies.
