Marylanders: Did you regret not choosing Virginia when it came time to apply to college?

Anonymous
No that was referring to the horrible murder at Uva. But....now that you bring it up... in June, a Bear did wander into the University garage and police had a "lock down" to prevent attack..... lol. Poor Va. Tech....

this is kinda a moot point for most of you since UVa is so much more selective than UMd. Of course, I doubt any of the Thomas Jefferson grads would consider UMd even as a safety school. Churchill, Whitmanm, Blair grads maybe.

I don't really get this pissing contest between Maryland and Virginia residents over high schools and colleges. It's not like the vast majority of you all had anything to do with these schools achieving the ranking they have. You're all consumers just like the rest of us.

We should just be glad that the US has such a vast higher education system that there are lots of opportunities out there for all kinds of people.

agree with all this, and also abhor "pissing contests." Maybe that's what the OP was hoping for in starting the thread.
I came to it very late (just this a.m.). My inital thought on reading it was Umd accepts 51.6% percent of the applicants making it "selective" whereas UVa is a much tougher school to get into (acceptance rate aout 30%). Kinda moot then to ask why some didn'y apply to Uva - answer is pretty obvious: they knew they couldn't get in.

What is selective about a 51.6% acceptance rate or even 30% for that matter?

Latest world rankings hopkins>umd>UVA>>vtech. UVA..... No tangable results from grads. Apparently selecting inferiority.

Every time you use google, universal price code, wear under armour, watch a jumbotron , watch Seinfeld, the muppets, the wire or curb your enthusism, watch a weather report with Doppler radar , rely on a insulin pump or impanted defibulator, listen to Sirius satellite radio, use high octane fuel, eat at outback steakhouse, appreciate that Nixon was impeached, soforth etc...and forever. Always remember the superiority of UMD!!!!!

UMD's honors program is much more selective than the school as a whole.

Perception is reality. I live in DC and would rather send my child to UVa than UMD.

the kind of people who go to UVA think perception is reality... That's why they are so unproductive.

umd 4 Nobel peace prize winners on faculty. UVA.....you guessed it... Zippy !

It's basically viewed as: (1) not as good as Virginia Tech, much less U.Va; (2) full of kids from New Jersey and New York who couldn't get into the top SUNY schools or Rutgers; (3) full of hooligans who riot after any significant athletic event; and (4) located in an exceptionally dumpy part of the DC region, with none of the atmosphere that one would desire from a college town. Hopkins is better, but it's a niche school for pre-professionals, rather than a well-rounded liberal arts school, and it's also located near a dangerous part of Baltimore.

Yes, Montgomery County has some nice suburbs, and less congestion than NoVa, but from an educational standpoint Maryland is basically flyover territory.

DCer here so I don't really care about whether MD or VA schools are better but I just met with dd's college counselor last week and he told us that Rutgers would be a safety school for her while College Park would be a stretch. I think, pp, you are living in the past.

Yeah, maybe Rutgers-Camden.

From USA Today piece on acceptance rates:
Rutgers-Camden 56.1%
Rutgers-New Brunswick 61.2%
UMD-College Park 51.6%

those are 2006 figures. Fall2009 numbers are umd 42% acceptance, UVA 42.3% acceptance.
