Hate my job but MUST stay in it until Jan 2 for my retirement to vest

You just gotta grind OP. This will be in the rear view soon. Are there things you can look forward to each week?

If it's government, the holiday party is optional. Also, it takes more than 6 weeks to fire someone for anything other than gross misconduct. Show up, do some work, clock out and forget about the day

You need to learn to stand up for yourself. When your boss comes and yells at you and insults your character you start writing notes if you can’t yell back. Then you email him what he said and say that it isn’t acceptable to insult your character and he is creating a hostile work environment and cc his boss. Make sure to print out the email so you have a copy because when you leave you will lose access to your email. You are leaving anyway.

Do you know with certainly what date he yelled at you before? Reference that date as well. Today write down exactly your recollections of what was said. Include that in your email as well.

What did he say that insulted your character?

Why have you not been to HR? Nobody should scream at anybody in a professional setting. Document, document, document...

Op here. My understanding is that it’s not illegal for a boss to be a jerk. It’s only illegal if they are bullying you for a protected reason. So him yelling at me for being an idiot is not protected, but if he called me a racial slur it would be.

I might be wrong. I did go to my leadership on this but they backed him 100% and tried to get me to resign and things have been bad for me ever since.

OP- if someone is yelling at you, go to HR.

If they are nit really yelling, deal for a few
More weeks and my guess is you will all be happier.

I have been in toxic work environments. I can’t imagine anyone walking me to the door. It sounds like you have been a big issue.

It is her leave. She is entitled to take it.

You don't understand how sick time normally works. Companies offer employees sick time because they don't want sick employees coming to work to make everyone else sick. They normally expect employees to take fewer sick days than are offered. If a company offers, say, twenty sick days per year, it would (and should) be highly unusual for an employee to actually take all of that time, because few people are actually sick that much. Having X number of sick days does not equal entitlement to take X number of paid days off to do whatever. This is distinct from vacation time, which does convey entitlement to use that time as desired. That is why companies make that distinction.

This is such BS.

RTO butts in seats culture disproves this.

Leave is an entitlement-whether someone is sick or having a mental health situation or something else-what difference does it make?

Well, obviously, it depends upon your organization's policies, but everywhere that I have worked had the policy that sick time is for when you or a child is actually sick. Not for "mental health" and not for "something else."

Taking sick time without actually being sick (unless your organization allows it) is fraud.

Why would you not take a vacation day instead?

Op here. Because it is mandatory and no one is allowed to take leave that day.

I’ve got such bad anxiety though that I have severe diarrhea. I’m sure I’ll be spending the morning on the toilet the day of the party. Is that a good enough reason to take sick time?

OMG. Just don't go. Nothing's going to happen to you that hasn't already happened in this terrible office. What will they do? Yell at you? "Larla, you're stupid because you didn't come to the party." Yell back "Your party gave me the shits."

HR told you right - it’s not illegal for boss to be a jerk. It’s bad for morale and retention, so HR would care in a perfect world but that’s not where we live.

Good luck!

Op here. I mean, I think that is likely but how can I prove it? When I went to leadership about his bullying they didn’t believe that it happened at all. This guy kisses up and kicks down so they all think he’s a sweetheart.
