Hate my job but MUST stay in it until Jan 2 for my retirement to vest

Start yelling back. Bullies need to be told to shut the F up.

Have you considered filing a complaint (hostile work environment)? What you describe is sickening, and no one should put up with it.

Glad you’re getting out. Keep your eyes on the prize. You’ll be glad you toughed it out until vesting.

It sounds like a startup with a 5 year vesting schedule. OP is probably a skill specific senior hire with a non compete. They are betting on her can’t find comparable pay for a while.

This!

The holiday lunch is something you should get through. They will likely be a little salty when you give your notice if they really are “snakes,” and this way you can preserve as much good feeling as you can by fully participating at work now, and you’ll be able to make the case later that “during the holidays, I did a lot of thinking, and I made this decision after giving it really careful thought.” Hard to argue with that.

Isn't your vesting 1 year at a time? So you'll only get 1 year vested at the 5 year mark?

Is this Amazon? Any company with aggressive vesting is aggressive for a reason.

That said, you should definitely leave.

Yeah this definitely does not sound like the government. Try to schedule some fun weekend activities (even just coffee with a friend) so you have something to look forward to each week.

Create a bingo card with the ridiculous things that usually happen. "Larla reminds me 3x about X", "Larlo makes snide comment", "Marla finds way to pat self on back", etc. Come up with some prizes if you get bingo, and if you cover the board!

Definitely go to the holiday lunch. Be as present as you can. See how fake and quickly you can get out of conversations. Turn everything into a game.

I hate this forum sometimes.

You DO NOT fake being sick.

You show up and you do your job. If you don't want to go to the mandatory lunch, you take a vacation day (unpaid if necessary) that day. You have six weeks to go; even the most miserable job in the world should be do-able for six weeks. If it is really that bad, you quit now and accept the loss of retirement vesting as the cost of getting out of a bad situation. Then, you move on to a new job.

Being fake-sick screws over people who are actually sick (now and in the future). This is up there with the annoying thread about continuing to employ a useless old guy to get him to retirement age (at the taxpayers' expense).

Op here. Nope not kidding. Things are very difficult at work. The micromanagement, toxicity, screaming, backstabbing, and lying are worse than any other job I’ve ever had. And I’ve just had it. I’m so completely done. I don’t trust my bosses, they don’t trust me, there’s no goodwill between us. Screaming matches are not unheard of in our office.

I’m a very non confrontational person and just knowing that someone could come into my office and start yelling at me at any moment has left me so on edge that I’m having trouble sleeping, eating, etc.

Sorry, OP. I had a fed supervisor like that. Two actually. I think some folks thrive on the anxiety they provoke in others.

The higher ups are yelling and confrontational and lie - is this a particular local University, OP?

I am queen of the 7 or 8 am dr appointment then you have the rest of the day free.

Call in sick for the event or go and leave 5 minutes after it starts with an “emergency” baby sitter called and you gotta go now.

Agree. The pandemic turned workers into chronic complainers.

She just had a baby and they won’t let her work remote. She has a way better and cuter friend now. Leave her alone

She had a baby a YEAR ago. She is the perfect example of what’s wrong with remote jobs. She’s expected to work, not get paid to stay home with her baby.

Look for new jobs anyway and give the new employer a copy of the job compete. They maybe able to get you out of that some of those agreements are ridiculous. First of all never sign one.

Op here. I don’t really get why you’re so angry. Leave is an entitlement-whether someone is sick or having a mental health situation or something else-what difference does it make? Especially when we’re talking about calling in sick to avoid a holiday party. Of all days to miss, that’s one where work for sure was not going to happen.
