What Asian pool? It is 2023 and universities don't receive that data anymore.
|
The questions are still there and they do receive the data unless they choose to hide it from themselves. That said, good point in that this is more relevant now for the advanced degrees. Less so for undergrad. |
| My kid submitted several. There was a pre-submission notice that said XXX University has opted to not receive... and it listed the data they choose to not accept. Each one was different but they all said they would not accept race data |

The Common App is not subject to the Supreme Court decision because it is a non-profit THAT DOESN'T MAKE ADMISSION DECISIONS. The Common App collects the data for research and also will provide racial demographic data to schools that request it after the admissions process. Schools that receive federal funding are REQUIRED by the federal gov to collect demographic data under Title IX.
That is why the race box is still on the Common App. |
Also, top tier competitive schools have an algorithm where they re-calculate the GPA and create their own GPA. From what I have seen, it is new summarized metadata (in a shirt table/chart) that goes on the application with the new GPA; the standardized test score, if any; the state, the gender; private, or public school; other data - affiliated in someway with the university or some other sort of preferred category (URM/1G). That’s the organizational metadata. |
Other is not an option on the common app |
Np. 1/2 south Asian and 1/2 white kid. Our private CC told us not to complete. Given schools don’t get the info now, it doesn’t matter for purposes of admissions. In terms of discussing ethnicity/multi-racial status in the app, it’s a hard call. Could be a benefit in some places bc male child not stem/pre-med and more humanities focused. It’s a school by school evaluation…. |
Jeezus |
| OP, the biggest disadvantage your kid may have is if they have similar applications to lots of other kids. This idea tge URMs are somehow taking spots away from Asian or white kids is false and ludicrous. Also, as many others noted, race is not a data point for applications. But, you should know that, so I am also wondering if you are a troll. |
I think at W&M, you do not apply by major, at UVA, you apply by college, and at VT, you do apply by major. |
I have an Asian/White kid who applied ED at W&M last year. Did have to indicate the intended major. Kid identifies as multiracial and has not experienced a disadvantage. Was accepted. |
| Somehow my half white, half Asian kids got into multiple great schools each. I spent zero time worrying about this because I have confidence in my kids. |
There are always white/Asian kids who got in obviously. It's getting exponentially harder because the unfair disadvantage they're subject to. |
They don't hold you to intended major. |
We didn't worry about this as well. My kid was confident that they didn't have to hide who they are. |
