Saturday - Thousands expected to attend pro-Palestine march in DC for ceasefire in Israel-Hamas war

Whatever his or her (or perhaps their, which definitely works well for Hamas) intention may be, in effect your college student will be strengthening the hand of a terrorist organization.

Sure, you can argue that it's not. You sound just like Southerners when they talk about "States' Rights."

It is not a dog whistle in that an audience has to understand and appreciate the message in the dog whistle. In this case, people are telling you that “destroy Jews” or “kill all Israelis” or whatever you think it means is not what they hear - they dont hear the dog whistle. You can think they are misguided. I guess you can disbelieve them. But if you listen to people about what they are saying rather than what you assume they are saying, we will get further.

I appreciate that some probably do say this to mean “exterminate all Jews”. I also accept that most Israelis who voted for Likud do not want to murder all Palestinians (they use the phrase too).

If you can understand that the Arab Americans and the college kids marching are not saying what you fear they are, we might be able to get to a better place.

this is so hypocritical though. how did we get from obsession with “microaggressions” - like asking someone where they are from or making tacos while white - to having the responsibility to “understand” that a statement commonly known to mean “destroy Israel” doesn’t actually mean that.

It is known in your circles. It is not known in mine (and I am a completely uninvolved outsider). It is also not what is understood in dorm rooms where kids are passing around pictures of deal Palestinian kids and saying “we have to do something”.

huh ask yourself why they are passing around pictures of dead Palestinians and not dead Israeli children or dead Syrian children?

Your college student should research the organizations sponsoring the event and the speakers to assess whether the message is actually “ceasefire.”

Because they are protesting their govt and their govt actions. Why is this so hard for you to understand? Every American holds some culpability in the deaths of these children. Some may say that it is necessary to allow Israel to protect herself (which should also be a US goal). But some, like the protesters, believe Israel is going too far and want their govt to not fund this.

You should stop being a fear monger.

Protesting is a right of passage for college students (Vietnam, divestment from South Africa, $ for AIDS, Take Back the Night).

It’s good for kids to see there is a world beyond themselves.

This. Look at the sponsors and make a decision.

Then those kids should be educated not taken advantage of by those that really really DO want to destroy Israel and all Jews. JFC

Mine too. Just tell him/her that if they see anything that is anti semitic, they should walk away. I know my kid will do that. She went last night to a dinner put on by the Hillel organization (is that the right terminology?) to honor the hostages being held. I do very proud of the way she is trying to learn and lead with her heart.

Better for them to get out and talk to people than drown themselves in the conspiracy hole of the internet with all its weird proofs and disinformation.

Well at their cease fire marches in NYC many were carrying swastikas and chanting anti semitic slurs. Anything but peaceful.

Then thank god Trump is not president or he would say there are good people on both sides

Do you think the hundreds of thousands of people marching around the world want to destroy Israel and Al Jews? Or do you think the primary message of the marchers - stop the bombing - is coming through? Because I think it’s the latter. There are always going to be people who are trying to discredit all the marches and point to the extremists who are both violent and anti semitic. Don’t get taken in by them and listen to the overall message.
