What are the protestors asking of Hamas and the people in Gaza?

Free Palestine starts with the area under the control of Palestinians. Yet Hamas has shown no interest in supporting any sort of free society in Gaza since taking control.

Honestly. At this point, it’s not fruitful to harp on about who is responsible for anything in that part of the world.

Better to focus on the future, which is what people are trying to do.

No one should want any more deaths or injuries. There have been enough.

Time for a ceasefire.

What makes you so sure a ceasefire would result in peace. The war began because Hamas broke a pre-existing cease fire. In fact the rockets launched into Israel have been constant for years, and some of them get through.

If your chant is "long live the Intifada" or "from the river to the sea," you aren't protesting for a cease fire.

Your college student should research the organizations sponsoring the event and the speakers to assess whether the message is actually “ceasefire.”

You should stop being a fear monger.

Protesting is a right of passage for college students (Vietnam, divestment from South Africa, $ for AIDS, Take Back the Night).

It’s good for kids to see there is a world beyond themselves.

and finding out that ANSWER is a Communist front is also a rite of passage

Sure, you can argue that it's not. You sound just like Southerners when they talk about "States' Rights."

It is not a dog whistle in that an audience has to understand and appreciate the message in the dog whistle. In this case, people are telling you that “destroy Jews” or “kill all Israelis” or whatever you think it means is not what they hear - they dont hear the dog whistle. You can think they are misguided. I guess you can disbelieve them. But if you listen to people about what they are saying rather than what you assume they are saying, we will get further.

I appreciate that some probably do say this to mean “exterminate all Jews”. I also accept that most Israelis who voted for Likud do not want to murder all Palestinians (they use the phrase too).

If you can understand that the Arab Americans and the college kids marching are not saying what you fear they are, we might be able to get to a better place.

this is so hypocritical though. how did we get from obsession with “microaggressions” - like asking someone where they are from or making tacos while white - to having the responsibility to “understand” that a statement commonly known to mean “destroy Israel” doesn’t actually mean that.

It is known in your circles. It is not known in mine (and I am a completely uninvolved outsider). It is also not what is understood in dorm rooms where kids are passing around pictures of deal Palestinian kids and saying “we have to do something”.

Then those kids should be educated not taken advantage of by those that really really DO want to destroy Israel and all Jews. JFC

Better for them to get out and talk to people than drown themselves in the conspiracy hole of the internet with all its weird proofs and disinformation.

Protests are not a place for nuanced discussions. Protests are Twitter posts shouted out loud.

Pp here. I’m old enough to have seen this movie before. I’m frankly sceptical there will ever be peace in that part of the world. It’s unsatisfactory and disheartening but we also need to be realistic.

Better to keep everyone at the table talking about the future than this. Let’s fund diplomacy.

I’m sorry you’ve not yet gone out and protested something. Give it a try! You might be pleasantly surprised.

DP: I have. And I’ve regretted every one. Except the rally for sanity, which was fun.

I agree. Maybe the PP could run a March asking for Hamas to release all hostages. I bet a lot of college kids would join.

A dog whistle is something that sounds innocuous to some people but communicates something more insidious to others.

“From the River to the Sea” is exactly that.

Calling for a free Palestine sounds innocent, but people have been using the chant for years to call for a one state solution.

The fact that people ignorantly chant it doesn’t make it less of a dog whistle. The antisemites know, and it’s not exactly a secret.

Sadly, this won't put them off. Our dumb kids are all pro-Marxist. What a world.

I have no control over Hamas.

What I can do is protest my own governments actions.

And, much of the money sent to Israel by the US is to replenish the iron dome. So, you are protesting the US protecting the lives of Jews.

A call for a ceasefire means everyone ceases fire.

“From the River to the Sea” isn’t calling for a ceasefire. It’s calling for a one state solution.

It leaves to the imagination how you get there.

But when Israelis, including members of the current Israeli government, say “from the river to the sea” and, most of all, act on the ground to fulfill the statement, then it’s ok because the bible, the Holocaust and so on, right?

They should March for this:

1. Free the hostages now

2. Free Palestine from Hamas

3. Ceasefire now; Israelis & Palestinians join together for a peaceful future

Anything short of this is merely a one-sided exercise in futility.

Indeed I have. Here's what I saw, and bear in mind this was for causes I support. There's always a group leading chants and playing drums to whip people up. Mind you, no one in "whipped up" mode us capable of rational thought. Protests with yelling and directed chants and drums are exercises in directing a mob. Mobs are dangerous.

If it isn't deal with it. America is tired of funding Israel. We do educate our own children here.
