If 45+ and you had a chance to talk to your 38-year-old self, what would you say?

lift heavy. Higher a trainer for two weeks to instruct you on HOW to lift and then get to the gym and pump.
I say this as I started lifting heavy at age 45 and it made a world of difference.

How heavy?

- have that third child and keep leaning in at work. The promotions will happen. You will have the money but at some point it will be too late to have that third child. Trust yoursefl and take some (calculated) risks.
- be purposeful in the time you spend with your kids. Yes it is trope but it is true: time flies you will regret the time not spent and memories not spent with them. PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY.
- Build your strength training routine. you can keep improving your fitness. This is not only about staying thin.
- drop the relationships that make you feel bad. Disengage. Those friends wont improve.
- your husband and your family (parents, brothers and sisters, in laws..) are your lifelong relationships. Friends are essentials but they should be treated as well or better than your friends.

It's ok to drop your husband and your parents. It's ok to drop any toxic relationship and seek happy, healthy, thriving people. Friends are essential and no romantic relationship can sustain you on its own.

You made the right decision to quit your big corporate job for something more entrepreneurial. It was risky but it really paid off. Oh, the married guy who hit on you at the conference got divorced a year later and got fired because he had an affair with his assistant.

How heavy?

as heavy as you can manage and build up.
Today in a tabata class I lifted two 15 lb dumbells overhead for a tricep lift. Most gals had the 8s.

Some people on this thread sound like they are in their 80s rather than their 40s. Sheesh.

This entire thread is weird. 38 ain't all that different from 45. I wonder if op made a typo and she's actually 28.

Go ahead and sleep with as many as you can. Life is too short to be monogamous or stay in a relationship with unsatisfactory sex.

Nah I agree with them. Besides you have to lift heavy and eat a certain way to be all muscles. It’s not just a matter of aesthetic but health. I don’t want to be a frail old lady with limited mobility.
