MoCo 24-25 calendar feedback

Anonymous
Two sample calendars were presented to the policy management committee today.

Sample A has school starting Aug. 26 and ending June 12.
Sample B has school starting Sept. 3 and ending June 20.

Both scenarios have winter break as Dec. 23 through Jan. 1, and spring break as Apr. 14 through 21.

These will be discussed by the full board at the Oct. 26 meeting.

Note that for Sample B, the last day of school is Friday, June 20, the day after the Thursday Juneteenth holiday. So there would be three days of school, a Thursday holiday, then an early release day on the last day.

A makes more sense

Agree that A makes a lot more sense. That last week will be absolutely useless on B if you have a day off and a half day after that.

Agree that A is better.

They're intended for parent-teacher conferences.

You must have an elementary student. PTCs are not a thing when teachers have 120+ students, and those who really need it cannot accomplish anything in 5min other than look at the grade book together and set up a time to meet.

They exist in MS in MCPS.

Schools that do them well restrict them to students who are at risk. Other schools try to allow every parent 5 min and create a rolling dumpster fire that serves no one well.

October 3rd is listed as a PD day on both calendars and that’s Rosh Hashanah!

Good grief, I hope it was an accident they quickly fix not a new idea someone had.

Hmm, they did not mention this at the meeting as a change they intended to make. (It has been a non-instructional day on past calendars.)

It'd be nice if Christmas break was a full two weeks like practically every other school in the entire country.

+1. Coming back from break for a 2-day week is stupid.

It has never been two weeks around here; also we call it winter break. Feel free to move back to Ohio if it’s important to you.

DP, seriously what is with the snark? PP is correct- for the majority of the country, winter break is two weeks. Yes, it's called winter break. Also, not the end of the world. Find better things to be mad about. You sound like a joy to be around.

Also-I'm from LA-it was always two weeks for us too. My sister lives in Seattle-two weeks. Who gets so defensive about winter break? MoCo people are always such a trip.

That’s a pretty nasty reply. Many of us would like two weeks to see family or go on a real vacation with our kids.

Signed - a non Christian who would love 2 weeks of family time when things are slow everywhere

You sound like someone who has proudly never left their hometown. Maybe get out and see the world and you won't be so angry all the time. Just because something has always been done a certain way, doesnt make it correct. Two weeks is absolutely optimal for a WINTER break.
