Fall outfits

NP with a few related pant/shoe questions.

Multiple posters suggested wide legged and/or trouser jeans and pants. Several teamed these with loafers or flats. At what point do you hem the pant vis a vis the shoe- where does the hem brush on your foot - how much of the loafer or ballet flat shows?

If you wear cropped versions of these style pants and team with booties, does the pant reach to below the top of the boot, or do you show bare leg in between and if so how much?

I’m 5’9” and like everything is cropped these days. I have struggled to find anything not cropped. Everlane is the worst for this.

I’m “only” 5’7” but have the same issue. I often have to buy tall pants and occasionally hem them but usually they’re fine. Totally the opposite of when I was a teen (90s) and had to hem everything, especially jeans.

I’m an inch shorter and even I have to buy pants in Tall lately. Otherwise they are above the ankles and look terrible.

I’m 5’4” and don’t even have long legs and recently bought jeans in Tall for the same reason.

Ha, I'm 5'3" and I love the cropped trend because they fit me like regular length, and I no longer have to get jeans hemmed.

Where are you shopping? I've only had time to try on pants in two stores but nothing was cropped and I couldn't wear any of the wide legs, it was back to the 2000s in a bad way when I couldn't find wide leg or flared jeans I wasn't stepping on. Unfortunately, since I'm not a teenager anymore I can't spend Saturday trying on in every store in the mall.

Amen! I usually have to go straight from the store to the seamstress. I have no sympathy for tall people when it comes to clothes.

Since you're an adult, you can just go get those pants hemmed. It's an inexpensive alteration. If the store I'm buying from doesn't offer the service, I use the tailor at my dry cleaner who does a good job and never charged more than $15.

Many women have fit issues that are much more difficult to address than just needing things hemmed a bit, so I never understand this complaint. Most pants cannot be let out so tall women don't have this option. Or try having a small chest and very wide hips and shopping for dresses, or simply having a very large chest. Or being extremely long or short waisted.

Skinny jeans, structured boots, oversize sweater and a nice scarf. I love dressing in fall - it’s the best season for fashion IMO.

Yes! I hate it when people declare something out in unison, like vocal lemmings. Multiple Jean fashions can coexist or be in style simultaneously because there are so many different body types and no one style flatters all.

This! Skinnies look terrible on me (broad shoulders), so I started buying wider jeans once they hit the stores again. If you like skinnies, do for it!

What? You can cut off fabric! I cannot add it on. No need to be so rude.

NP but I'm 5'2" and do well with the current "cropped" styles, which are usually full-length on me. I shop at Anthropologies, Nordstrom, Saks, etc. mostly online. Brands I like for these styles are Paige, Frame, and Mother - haven't had to get any of those hemmed (but again, only with the cropped/ankle-length fits). I do have trouble finding nice work pants right now - just caved and ordered a few pairs from Talbots. I got the Italian wool wide-leg pants in the petite length and was surprised how nice the quality was. Most of their pants are poly blends (like all pants it seems!) but these are pure wool, fully lined, and draped nicely. JCrew and Banana Republic are the other usual suspects for nicer petite-length pants.

I mean, this is how fashion works. Things go in and out of style. You can keep wearing skinny jeans if you want, but that doesn’t make them in.

+1

Things go in and out of style, and whether they are "in" has literally ZERO correlation to how flattering they tend to be. That overall skinny jeans look sounds dated and out of style (it's often more about the shoes and accessories than the denim). But that doesn't mean it's unflattering...wear what you want.

I think this is an antiquated picture of how "in style" is defined. This may have been the case previously, when there were few voices determining trends. Now that there are so many fashion influencers or just people creating / trying trends, multiple trends can coexist simultaneously. I think this article in the NYT addresses the topic well. I think there are others but I don't feel like looking.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/24/style/high-waisted-pants-mom-jeans.html

Sort of.. but not exactly. It is true that multiple trends can coexist, but the fact that some people are still wearing the exact outfits they wore 10 years ago doesn’t mean that those are fashionable. Of course wear whatever you want… but this is the fashion forum so when people ask about what to wear this season, I don’t think they are asking what someone who pays zero attention to current trends is wearing.

+1 when I see someone now wearing skinny jeans, I don’t think “what an independent and original thinker!” I think “they must not have the time/money/inclination to keep their wardrobe current.” To be clear, I don’t judge people for that - to each their own, truly. But let’s not pretend that trends don’t still exist and that certain looks don’t look dated.

I definitely do not have the inclination to wear the fugly mom jean trend.

I’m 5’11” with a 33.5 inch inseam and I still have to get things hemmed all the time. Nobody has a universal inseam. They don’t make pants by the inch.

Mine are from Banana Republic and do not seem to be available anymore. They’re dark denim and mid-rise, which is high waisted for me. For me, they’re super flattering and fit well.

Can you post some links to nice cardigans?

The trend is for knit “lady cardigans,” kind of Chanel vibes with a cropped fit, pockets and standout buttons. I have mixed feelings, and they are definitely EVERYWHERE.

I actively disliked them when I first saw them, but I’ve come around. They look way better on me than traditional blazers do and I find them easier to style.

They have been "everywhere" for the last 6 years or so, so hopefully they're on their last legs. We shouldn't all have to dress like we're 80-year-old grandmas at the country club.
