No early decision or legacy preferences Virginia Tech

Thanks all who shared their thoughts re: my daughter.

She will be in-state. She is taking the following AP classes this fall/sr year:

AP Calc BC
AP Bio
AP physics 2
AP physics C M

Other classes are HN history, HN English and theatre (they’ve taken theatre every year).

This will hopefully put pressure on UVA. They give massive legacy preference and I think even have an office dedicated to just that.

Yep, here it is - a whole program set up for Legacies to be admitted. https://s3.amazonaws.com/uva-alumni-association/alp/ALP-Booklet-2019.pdf

UVA really is awful. They removed the legacy check box but added an essay to write about it. What a joke. This is from a Washington post article that came out today:

Another question is new and optional: “If you have a personal or historic connection with UVA, and if you’d like to share how your experience of this connection has prepared you to contribute to the University, please share your thoughts here. Such relationships might include, but are not limited to, being a child of someone who graduated from or works for UVA, a descendant of ancestors who labored at UVA, or a participant in UVA programs.”

Same here! DS was planning the same and even with that it would have been a stretch.. Guess he's headed to GMU or JMU. Oh well..

VCU looking good.

First ten piercings are free with admission to VCU!!!

Not someone whose tax dollars supported UVA?

I also applaud VT's decision and hope UVA moves in same direction. I suspect this may impact VT's enrollment management, which it only recently seemed to get a handle on after relying on the waitlist for several years. Given the strong demand (45K applications), I'm sure they'll have no problem filling the class, but I won't be surprised if Admissions relies heavily on the waitlist during the next 2-3 admissions cycles.

VCU is more popular than ever.

Michigan sure seems to. Have seen numerous dumb as sh$t kids admitted because Mommy and Daddy went It’s unbelievable what gets in. Big donations, I guess.

Sure hope my “dumb as shit” legacy DC gets in with his 36 ACT.

Too late to announce such a big change. Kids have to be strategic and now they have to wait till Feb to find out if they got in. That means completing and paying for more apps since they can’t find out in Dec, before other schools’deadlines

I'd say she should have no problems getting in. She'd probably also get into UVA if that school is of interest, esp. ED.

NP, I think UVA might be tough with honors English and history. They probably want to see AP (if available).

Thank you. She’ll be applying to UVA, she did enjoy the engineering day there. Also VCU and JMU (though JMU doesn’t have the specific engineering major she wants - chemical).

Out of state will only be possible with scholarships and a lot of financial aid, but she is also applying to Delaware, Purdue and Berkeley. Possibly Johns Hopkins.

Honestly, we probably need to relook at colleges now.

Probably. I guess it will be what it will be. She will get in somewhere, and will get an excellent education, even if it’s not at her top options. She really liked the Chem engineering program at UVA, it was her second pick over VA Tech.

Has she already taken AP history and AP English?
