+1 Why should a public university give legacy preference?

Were legacies ever a thing there? Their main goal was 40% first gen or urm. I guess they will have to change the urm part after the Supreme Court ruling.

I had not heard about the change in ED - that was DS's plan for this year. Oh well.

They can still perform URM outreach. Essays and other identifiers will still be there for consideration.

Personally I’m glad they discontinued ED, very few publics do ED. Plus last year they had so many apply ED it was not as much as an acceptance boost as it was in the past.

They can, but all it takes is one employee telling Miyares's office that there is a hidden mandate to ignore the Supreme Court for the state to investigate.

Because they want this:

https://cardinalnews.org/2022/08/17/virginia-tech-sets-record-for-donations-more/

Alumni, friends, parents, employees, and students combined to make nearly $268.5 million in new gifts and commitments during the 2021-22 fiscal year that ran from July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022, according to the school.

The all-time-record show of generosity was a 34 percent from the $200.3 million given in fiscal year 2020-21.

You're glad they ended ED because it didn't give sufficient acceptance boost?
Did Virginia Tech give a reason for the change?

To some extent. VT doesn't consider the common app essay. It does, however, have a number of supplementals. In our experience, answering those well can be a differentiator.

I suppose a minority candidate could just self-identify in those essays.
