No early decision or legacy preferences Virginia Tech

Dang. We were a year to early. High stats kid from FCPS wanted to apply but also keep options open so wasn't interest in ED. Understand acceptance would have been very difficult RD. Perhaps this was a common theme and VT recognized??

Don't think their treatment of high stats kids who they think won't attend will be impacted by this decision.

My big question - when Common App opens tomorrow, do we think many other colleges will have dropped ED?

In the last few years early decision application numbers have been trending up with about the same amount accepted. So lower acceptance rate than EA (but you also had some less qualified students apply hoping the ED gave them a bump) You definitely don’t get the same admissions boost at VT as other ED school that accept many more sbd fill their class with ED. At VT it’s really early action that fills the class anyway. Regular decision is for open spots. That being said a high stats kid from fcps who applied ED would have a better chance or a kid who fit a need that often went unfilled at VT (unpopular major, demographics, race, gender, etc). My child was deferred ED bad accepted EA.

My kid wants V Tech more than any other college. She felt pretty good applying ED. She has other colleges she’ll be applying to, but is there any thought here on her chances EA? She’s feeling pretty down.

Major: engineering
1500 SAT (770 math)
4.32 weighted - honors in core, plus three APs junior year
AP scores of 5 in Chem, physics 1, stats
3 more APs for sr yr

Participated in the ODU/VTech/UVA BLAST program.

Light ECs: sport since elementary - on two teams since starting HS, instrument, theater, leadership role at away summer camp

YES. As a donut-hole family, we really do need to look at merit aid at different schools and weigh options carefully. I'm bummed my kid can't ED when it's a clear admissions advantage at some places. I'm happy VT is doing this!

Yeah, screw other people as long as it's better for you, right?

LOL. That's kind of the college admissions scam, isn't it? Don't hate on that PP. Hate the system and how it's set up. It's everyone for themselves and, knowing that, I care about exactly 1 person and that is my kid going through it. Not sorry.

Even non-binding ED?

To clarify, a non-binding early plan is called "Early Action" (EA), not ED.

Virginia Tech is offering EA.

If she weren't applying for engineering, I say she'd be a shoo-in. But as you know, engineering is the most competitive major at VT so no way of telling. But now that ED is gone, it doesn't matter -- just have her apply EA and see what happens. Also, her being female will give her a slight advantage according to VT's published accepted rates per gender.

As the other posted noted, if not engineering, she's a shoo-in. If targeting engineering she should do AP Calc and AP Physics BC sr year to make sure she's competitive. Her grades are great but not so high to be affected by VT's yield protection.

At VT do you apply as intended major? Are you able to change majors later as a sophomore or even junior like at some other universities ?

Some VT majors are "restricted" (e.g., engineering or business), meaning there is a limit on how many students can be in the program and, thus, how many may transfer into it.
