My stipulation traveling with ILS?

I would say MIL, you are SUCH a nice grandma for wanting to drive with us! The kids are really excited to watch the new season of Bluey, unfortunately our headphones broke yesterday so we'll just crank up the volume on the car stereo. We usually take a pee break every 30 minutes or so. Larlo gets carsick, do you mind sitting next to him and helping him use the barf bag? It will be SO helpful to have you along! We'll pick you up at 5 AM.

Zero chance I would have ever driven for 8 hours with my IL’s and I love them! Zero chance when I’m an in-law that’d I’d drive with my children and their spouse for 8 hours. Are you people nuts?

she wasn't comfortable doing the drive by herself.

Not enough of you are thinking about ILs age.
It would be more helpful if ILs would state clearly that this is a concern. Many elders would not drive 8hrs, certainly not in 1 day.

*They are fine to drive and make the trip a couple times a year.

There is no easy way for me to fly in alone

8 hours each way to what? A 2 bedroom condo share? How many bathrooms? Did the DH of OP participate in this timeshare purchase by giving input? 5 days off from work is 9 days with 2 spent on a horrendous drive.

Why not fly? This is not a unique circumstance or having to drive because you're bringing your large dog.

OP stated early on that the elderly ILs do this drive on their own all the time and that they don’t mind the drive.

OP, almost everyone this it’s fine for you to take two cars - not just because of the drive but because it will be more convenient to have two cars once you are there. But it also sounds like that’s not the outcome yet. What is your DH’s view? Is he not willing to support you on this? Maybe the tricky situation has nothing to do with your ILs and is instead a spouse issue?

This is stupid. All this does is give them the impression that you owe them one.

I guarantee they’ll still want to drive with you. And now they’ll expect major thanks for making your life more difficult. Very bad move.

OP is a troll who has not responded to any sound advice or questions.

Why, oh why, are you making this so hard, OP? Just ride in the third row. Then bring some books on tape or watch some movies. In the third row you'll be able to talk to your MIL and kid but you won't be able to talk to your FIL.

Also, grow up. You're getting a free vacation. Look at this as your price of admission because you're such a pita.

That’s not what this is, and it’s already been covered. Reading is fundamental.
