College applications cannot have boxes to check indicating an applicant's race.

However, unlike many on this board kept arrogantly asserting, the end of Roberts' opinion clearly specifies that universities MAY NOT use essays or any other soft means to set up essentially the same system in effect today. That means they cannot use a "back door" to still discriminate via soft methods. So, sorry racist people on DCUM, your dreams are shattered lol

There are so many "soft methods" that you can't even imagine.

The elite colleges and universities will continue to amass a super-diverse enrollment. Ha!

Colleges should be very very careful and ask themselves it it's worth the risk.
I see huge potential lawsuts

Oh the lawsuits are coming from all sides, you can bank on that now.

Wrongly deduced. Weatlh AA and Hispanic kids have other advantages....and their stats closely approximate the median.

They have already figured out that first Gen and low income preferences are race neutral. This decision is not going to benefit middle or upper class kids, if anything, will hurt them.

. I don't see any change in outcomes for Asian families next year. One year from now, the same kids who didn't get into ivies will be denied. Not much will change...

I know you hope and believe that.

While the ruling focuses specifically on barring race as a factor in admissions, it doesn't limit institutions' outreach, engagement, retention or completion strategies aimed at enrolling diverse student bodies. These activities will ensure diversity, although it may take 2-3 years to adapt to (co-opt / game) the new system.

Oh the lawsuits are coming from all sides, you can bank on that now.

"higher education will take five years to fully adjust to the new legal landscape, as committees and task forces—already in place at many schools—explore ways to employ income levels, socioeconomic factors and other race-neutral factors to maintain diversity."

Folks...us white people are the winners. Do you think the group that brought the cases to the Supreme Court care about Asians?

doesn't matter what you think. getting rid of AA will give Asian students (more) equal chances to be admitted. If white students are better, they deserve it.

The above arrogant poster is wrong.

Applicants can still write about how their race affected them as an individual in their college app essays.

I hope colleges and universities switch to preference for low income students as a proxy.
It would be interesting to see how that works out. And low income students are faced with huge obstacles

Agree that this helps poor, rural whites. SC decision deplored admitting affluent blacks as a way to increase black enrollment. Kids of all races attending great schools in large MSAs are f*cked.

Oh joy. The 3% of AAs on my son’s Ivy campus will go to 3%. I predict nothing changes for most elite schools.

MAGA conservative brought this case = benefit MAGA types = poor, rural whites.

In synopsis I glanced, the Court summarized affirmative action is stereotypical, something to that effect, assuming all race thinks alike, are similar, etc. I guess affirmative action assumes certain people are just naturally challenged intellectually. This is a great day for URM, as they will no longer be assumed to be inferior. Those who make it will be presumed to be qualified. Finally, URMs will receive equal treatment under the law. It's a great day in America when all people, whites, brown, and blacks are judged by the content of their character.

Are student-athletes assumed to be inferior?

Are third-generation alumni students assumed to be inferior?

Take it up with the justices. You are barking at the wrong person. You elected Trump. You voted in the SCOTUS justices. Elections have consequences.

The current majority is not getting rid of legacies or athletic recruits, affirmative action has long been a particular target for conservatives, they don’t care about the other categories. We likely won’t see the SC accept another college admissions case for years now that they can declar success on AA.

This thread is about celebrating the SCOTUS decision. The winners are all Americans, including whites, blacks, and browns. It's not about raining on their parade. Sotomayor, Kagan, and Jackson are the minnows. They are in the minority, kowtowing to the fringe thought leaders of the society.

Now do (1) legacy admissions, (2) development admissions, (3) faculty admissions!

Faculty admissions don’t belong on this list. It’s a tiny tiny segment of the population and professors don’t make much money. Free tuition for their kid is truly the least you can do for them.

You people are always accepting of discrimination and exceptions when it benefit you.........

You people?? Your kid attending your school has always been a perk of teaching at all levels. Are you mad at military people for their healthcare? If you want the perks of job, you can choose the job! But you won’t work for a teachers salary and you won’t put your life on the line for your country so quit complaining.

I don't understand some of you. Are you upset that Supreme Court overturned a racist law?

White students will be the primary beneficiaries
