Especially at community college. Very common to have single mothers at young ages there. However, the drop out rate is still very high. As is remedial high school English and math students.

You can thank legalized abortion and contraceptive availability for the rarity. All that is at risk right now with the Republicans. Sad to know there will be many young women and their families along with young men and their families faced with the consequences of unwanted pregnancies.

Of course.

All "not very common at all" responses are laughably naive

Girls drank like fishes.

My daughter moved to an apartment for quiter soundings and less idiots who came to college with zero sex ed

She loved VT engineering however freshman year her eyes got widened to the disparity of parenting and intelligence. Her words not mine.

It'll get more common in the south soon. Not with families who can afford plane tickets, but poorer students without resources will find themselves in awful positions.

I am fervently pro-choice and contraception, but more work has to be done with at-risk girls. They need aspirations other than becoming an unwed mother and receiving government subsidies as their path to “adulthood.” This segment of young women were giving birth despite available contraception and abortion.

Yes, being an "unwed mother" and receiving meager government subsidies is living it up! It's a gem of a life.

I was not trotting out the old “Welfare Queen” trope. I know benefits are scant and realize the difference between an unwed mother and a single mother is education and income. I just don’t think it’s lack of contraception or access to abortions behind these choices that perpetuate generational poverty. Just like food deserts, they made great clickbait and blurbs, but studies showed that poor families didn’t make better nutritional choices when Supermarkets with fruit and vegetables were available. These issues are nuanced and complex.

and this is why I plan to have my teen implanted with some sort of long term birth control before she goes to college....with her consent of course, before you jump down my throat.

Not very common.

The people who couldn't figure out contraceptives got pregnant in HS.

The only people I knew who got pregnant were date raped at frat parties. The frat guys don't tend to use protection and assume every woman is one the pill and available.

That's why the frats call freshmen "fresh meat." It's best to stay away from the frat parties until sophomore year, when you've grown a little wiser.

Smart

Their bodies will snap back in no time and they’ll have lots of energy to be involved in their kids’ lives through most of it
