Do you isolate your kids before a vacation?

You are weird but your friend is also wrong for being upset that you RSVPed no, politely.

Sorry, your friend is “wrong,” not “also wrong.” You are weird but not “wrong” and have violated no social rules.

I am team your friend. I don't isolate my kids before a trip

Getting on a plane alone exposes us to tons of germs. I think you have anxiety. I'm not going to stop my kids from having fun fore fear they may get sick. Do you stop then from running bc they may brake an arm?

Your friend should get over this. If she is a good friend she would know you are anxious ans accept the quirk. Medication may help you.

Oh, ffs, OP doesn’t need medication for attempting not to get sick before a big vacation. If she was anxious about germs all the time and never let her kids go to birthday parties, then sure, maybe. But that’s not what’s happening here.

No. Weird.

It’s not weird at all to be cautious before a big trip if this is your one vacation (fellow middle class family here). It’s not like we have the money to even reschedule it. It costs money to have to reschedule (plane change fees; some resorts you lose money on). I have found most upper middle class families around here truly do not understand what it’s like to worry about money so for them rescheduling a trip and losing some money is no big deal as it’s is chump change to begin with for them.

You must not have ever had a stomach virus ruin a vacation. Friend of mine drove the family 7 hours, checked into the hotel, child starts vomiting an hour later. Everyone went down in dominos. They spent the entire trip in the room to just go home after they were well enough to drive. Nightmare!

DP and you sound paranoid. This has happened to us more than once. We got it on vacation, at the resort. It’s horrible but happens. Do you isolate once you get to your vacation too?

I think it’s more devastating if it’s your one and only vacation for the year.

We go on many vacations each year. Sorry you’re poor

Sorry you exist.

When it’s happened to us, it’s been our one and only vacation for the year. My point is that we always caught it on vacation. I think you are far more likely to get sick there unless your vacation is in isolation at a beach house. Ours are not. I don’t spend my life worrying about what we might catch.

No. We did right when the world was opening back up again but now, definitely not. You could pick something up anywhere, so unless you’re going to live in a bubble then this is unreasonable and probably ineffectual.

That sucks that happened to your family. Of course children can always catch something while on the vacation. But if you can mitigate the chances of illness even a little bit, what’s the harm in it? So what if they miss out on a trampoline park party 1 week out of the year. They’ll be fine!

I have a family member that hosted a birthday party at her home the same week they were all sick with a violent stomach virus.

I know for a fact they did not disclose this info to their friends and attendees (We made up an excuse not to go).

Unfortunately it’s hard to assess risk when you’re counting on others to be honest.

We wear masks and take extra care with hand washing/purell etc anytime before a big event or trip. It's so easy and means we are less likely to miss what is most important to us. We probably wouldn't skip the birthday but we would be masked indoors and may leave early when food is involved

I do this sometimes. Obviously we can before Christmas or schoolyard trips. But we take a week off of camp before big summer trips.

Anonymous wrote:OP. Fair enough. I’ll take the weirdo title. But to be clear they aren’t kept indoors - they still play outside and in the pool all day etc but we just avoid germy places like parties and indoor play places.

FWIW, my kid got COVID last summer from a friend at the pool. Germs are everywhere.

We do this now to an extent after a terrible Memorial Day vacation where two of three kids of ours had a terrible croup cough to vomit appear one day after we arrived. Picked up from a friend of the youngest at school. I now try to avoid vacations during the school year.
