Do you isolate your kids before a vacation?

I bite my tongue it’s a bad habit

But plead a prior commitment next time; as Miss Mannwrs would say, there’s no need to reveal that the prior commitment is staying home avoiding germs.

Why can’t we be honest? I don’t get why this is so offensive to the host?

Its because OP is not truly isolating, she is picking and choosing what she thinks is highest risk, and its offensive to this family that she thinks they are more germy than others. If she were isolating from everyone it would be OK to advertise that. But she said she's doing other things just not this party. And her friend sees her doing other things so knows that she's not actually serious about isolating, she is just anxious about her family. Which is hurtful. And also illogical. The friend might have decided just not to put up with her weird quirks also.

She’s not isolating and in that way the subject line is misleading. But come on. Attending a (presumably preschool age) kid’s indoor birthday party with a bunch of other little kids is going to put you and your family at higher risk of getting some illness, than going to the grocery store and the pool and stuff. I’ve always avoided the super germy indoor play places, large kids parties, etc. right before a big vacation. Even before Covid. Because there’s a lot more disruptive stuff than Covid out there! Who wants to have to miss part of your carefully planned for vacation because your kid got bronchitis and pinkeye from a 2 year old’s birthday party at Pump It Up?

+1 exactly. An indoor party at a venue is always going to be higher risk than going to to pool or playing outside with friends.

You're weird, but as someone who always get sick on vacation, I understand the desire.

+1 Even pre COVID those indoor play places were the worst! And I know everyone says that planes are the worst when it comes to germs but in those play places I saw so many kids with runny noses and coughs drooling on toys and climbing and touching everything. My kids frequently got sick from those places whereas we've never had an issue with a plane. I would avoid those places right before a vacation because I just know its taking a risk thats not worth it to me.

I bring travel Clorox wipes on the plane to wipe down armrests and tray tables.

Super weird. Friend is right to be annoyed.

Well going on a big international trip in three days and kid is down with a fever. Highly regret that birthday party two days back that o didn’t want to go to in the first place. You are doing the right thing and your friend is petty.

We take numerous vacations every year and have never done this, and I’ve never had a ruined vacation. Perhaps we are just lucky.
To people really get that sick often that they can’t participate in regular activities? How many G.I. bugs are there going around in your lives?

If you take that many vacations, any given vacation may not mean as much to you as one carefully planned trip to a family that doesn’t have the time or money to go away so regularly. For us, we have planned two major trips involving air travel in our decade as parents and one of them was canceled due to my kids getting influenza outside of regular flu season.

You are more cautious than normal but not weird. I would do the same thing if I had the means. We also only go on one vacation a year usually and so many things can go wrong already, I don't need the added misery and stress of everyone being sick.

Your friend is being unreasonable and needs to get over herself.

Have a great vacation!

We don't go on many "big" vacations, so we stay home as much as possible the week before. People with endless money don't have to worry about such things.
