From being herself. Word is he was all in while she was taking a break after Reputation, and then during COVID "lockdown" but wasn't a fan of Taylor being Taylor with all the fans/publicity/etc.

I hate this relationship for her. However, Joe didn’t want to be with her clearly. He didn’t want to marry her according to her or be anymore integrated into her world than he already was. Matt Healy seems like a rebound who is being hyped into being more than he is because Taylor is licking her wounds. It’s very similar to her rollout of the Tom Hiddleston relationship that lasted two seconds.

His response of it doesn't really matter is telling: outward forces rarely change hearts and minds and all the internet outrage in the world isn't going to make TS fans care about the issue. He anecdote of a girlfriend with her boyfriend reveals that the public discourse is about how TS fans will react. In public they may nod their heads at woke-approved things but in reality the scandal doesn't matter in their world (white-girlness). And honesty, as an AA women, I say let them all think what they want because all the crying and begging of "accept me" does nothing
