U Richmond vs W&L

Not true.

Any person who goes to a college with sports can tell you that.

It's a SLAC in a small college town. Like 90% of SLACs.

I know at my kid’s DC private several students applied - only the ones at the very top were accepted. The state relating to to 10% are compelling, as is the information regarding outcomes and graduate school admissions. UR is a fine school that attracts a different level of student than W&L.

It's multiple posters. Plenty of people seem to think W&L is stronger, but without knowing how many students actually reported rank, we still do not have any significant evidence that there is an academic difference. [/quote]

According to SCHEV, last year's UR class had a 1535 at the 75th percentile, UR had only a 1500. W&L's median ACT is a 34. UR's is a 33

Is W&L the most prestigious college in the DMV?

Both schools are great schools and they definitely have different vibes. So finding the better fit for your child is equally important.

Oh please. Can we dispense with the "admissions stats" = better schools? With all the games these schools play in terms of admission . . . this means next to nothing.

I agree but how are you going to measure which school is better? What is the metric for "quality of instruction"?

Hopkins is the only truly prestigious university in the DMV, Georgetown has prestige but not as much as Hopkins. W&L is the most prestigious LAC in the DMV that I know of.

My kids went to a southern high school like this. Similar code. The kid who everyone thought was so perfect in every way and got accolades for everything was also one of the few who had a fake ID and bought alcohol for everyone who voted for him for leadership positions. He went to WL. He had all the adults snowed while other kids met with the honor code committee for much more minor things.

Similar schools with very different locations.

Does anyone with experience with either place know any students that vote conservative?

It was the same at a private high school my kids attended too. No idea why any adult thinks that official peer judgment is a good idea in today’s world. Kids are anxious and depressed over feeling constantly judged already. May as well just hand them a rope or a gun.

Doesn't UVA do the same thing?

Yes and it's a huge problem there too.

I'm not sure what the issue is. If no one snitches, why would you ever find yourself in front of the honor committee?

It’s in Lexington, not the DMV. Get a map.

Cheating isn't really addressed at UVA.

This thread isn't about UVA.

We know a kid who transferred with a 4.0 at W&L into Duke, not an athlete just regular transfer after sophomore. Duke crushed her. She was unprepared for the pace, barely 3.0 which is bottom 10% there.
Know three who went U of R to Vanderbilt, one struggled but ended over a 3.4 the other two did well and got a 3.8+ at Vanderbilt after almost a 4.0 at UofR.
Anecdotal certainly; bottom line the two schools are likely similar and neither is close to an elite.
