I’ve responded to a couple of posts. Honestly? Nothing. No food. I bring my own. If you want to do something, send me a nice email or a card. That would be greatly appreciated and I would be touched. The truth is most of us do not look forward to this week. At best, it’s a disruption. At worst, it gives us more to do.

So you complain you're not appreciated. Then complain when something is done in appreciation.

Got it.

I've always done my best to donate/volunteer for this stuff but I guess I'll rethink it if htis is the attitude.

This isn’t about you. It’s about what’s easiest for teachers. Try listening instead of foisting your grand ideas to make yourself look good on the whole school.

also, I'm a government employee and take my own lunches to work.

You know teachers do that too right?

I'm not a teacher, but I wish the people who plan these things would read and comprehend this. Instead, you get parents with the attitude of "I'm doing what you should want, now be happy, damn it!"

So, what would teachers like instead of a free lunch?

As a parent I really hate doing these. Sending in crock pots and taco bar type things is just hard and messy. My kid obviously can't carry these in, so it's on me to carry in in the morning. And then I have to schedule a time to pick up later (parking far away and then getting signed in and out of school each time...)

My youngest's preschool does it way better. There is a sign up genius for a "stock the break room." Everything on there is easy to purchase and easy to bring in. Like boxes of K cups, boxes of chips, snack boxes, lots from Costco. And then they have $5-10 gift cards that they give to every single teacher (I sent in several ChikFilA gift cards).

They want a grab and go thing. Not something you have to stand in line and make, or have a parent help with; like an ice cream bar or taco bar. Get Panera and set up in the lounge and let the teachers pick up what they want to take back to their rooms. Or they can sit in the lounge to eat. And then get the hell out. They don’t want parents in the lounge serving either, trying to listen to teachers’ conversations.

Oh, you are making some gross generalizations. First of all, no one knows me at my large HS as I'm a behind the scenes type, so "making myself look good" isn't a thing. And, frankly, I wouldn't care. I volunteer and donate b/c I want to show appreciation (I know that may be a hard concept for you, which I'm guessing is the reason for your bit----ness). But, if it's not appreciated, then I won't.

As for what's "easiest for teachers", our large HS has a diversity of people in it and lots of them. They surely all have different preferences and you're not going to please everyone. That's a fact. So we pick something and run with it. Hardly my "grand idea." Are you always this simple and foolish?

If you don't like it, feel free not to partake and leave it to those who enjoy it (and as we had next to nothing left over at our event plenty seemed to enjoy it just fine). But, I doubt that being so miserable you are able to enjoy much of anything. I feel sorry for you.

Because there are nearly 300 people on staff at our HS and not everyone wants the same thing. We pick something and inevitably some miserable person will be on here accusing well-intentioned parents of grandstanding and making it about them. You suck.

You first.

One of my issues with this is that this only happens in "pink collar" jobs. In non female dominated jobs, you get time off or a bonus. Pink collar jobs get free food, bulleting boards congratulating you and such. Maybe that's because we're forever telling teachers that they should have a passion for teaching and that they should want to do it for fun instead of a career.

I love our teachers, but neither parents nor teachers have time for this. I will send in a gift card and have my kid write a note. Done.

+1
I’m sure they are taking their own lunches the other 194 days.

Teacher appreciation week is so annoying. The admin should be doing it all.

Teacher here.... I am so very thankful for anything families want to do this week. At a title 1 school we don't have much of a PTA or a big fancy week. But the kids are sure to say thank you more often and our admin appreciates us with a lunch or too. Getting homemade cards and notes from parents is amazing.

Any teacher complaining about free lunch is just a grump and should be ignored.
