OMG What shall we do! The sky is falling!

I’m with PP on this. There’s really no reason not to communicate clearly on this. They sent out a newsletter earlier today. Why not use those communications to say something useful.

For all the parents waiting- I have two kids one who graduated from Poolesville and is at UMD and one that’s at PHS now.

At the time both applied, I was so caught up into the process and my kids had to get in.

In retrospect, I realize that my obsession (yes I admit it) with getting into a magnet program was unhealthy.

I’ve come to the realization that smart kids will do well in many environments. My UMD kid is friends with many kids that went to poorly ranked Maryland HS schools- yet they are all doing very well in their STEM college classes.

An admission or lack there of to a magnet program doesn’t determine your success. It’s just one stepping stone.

For those whose kids are accepted, congratulations! We’ve loved the experience and peer group.

For those that don’t get in (my younger one was originally waitlisted), I’ve seen first hand, great things from kids that were flat out rejected from these programs. Most MCPS schools (maybe all) offer BC Cal/ AP Bio etc- so there is a path for your child. I’m posting this because being put in the WP or flat out rejected is really tough.

Agree! RM is hosting a class selection night tonight for incomings. Would be nice to know beforehand what the status of application is.

Is this for magnet or all students?

It was useful except for those who never developed adequate reading comprehension. Seriously, stop looking for these little things to complain about and focus on the bigger picture.

They're factoring the changes to USPS made by the Trump administration so adding a few more days to the delivery time?

True. All Trump’s fault!

This is so thoughtful. I echo these sentiments. I have a recent graduate from one magnet and a current student in another. Some the nonmagnet classes have been some of the best classes. Both have friends who came from nonmag MSs and are super smart. Magnet programs provide great opportunities, but kids can still thrive without them. Hopefully, the AP/advanced teachers at various schools will foster a great learning environment, magnet or no. All the best to those who are waiting.

Any one got their informed delivery today? Do you see the letter from MCPS?

Everyone really needs to take a deep breath. Your stressing about this is only going to produce anxiety for your kid. Best thing you can do is to assure them that no matter the decision, they will be fine, life will go on, and you’ll love them just the same. This decision is just one moment in a lifetime of moments. Plenty of kids don’t go to the magnet programs and do great things in HS and in life.

Remember this is about the kids exploring a path for HS. If this path doesn’t work out, there are plenty of others to venture down.
