Told by christian friend that my lifelong depression is because I don’t “know Jesus”

My religious aunt had a small tumor at the base of her brain that she had removed. The preacher at her church told her she got it because she must have sinned. She found a new church. This was in Kentucky.

Interesting.

Although there are studies that show that children who were brought up with Faith 10 to be happier, that’s very different than clinical depression. You should seek out help from your general doctor. (MD)

Wow, that’s a terribly cruel thing to say to your aunt. Even if this preacher believed this kind of thing, which I guess he did, to say it is beyond terrible. What would this preacher give as the reason for all the children at St Jude’s that have terminal illnesses?

I don’t know and have never heard a single Christian person or pastor state physical illness is from God.

Karma (/ˈkɑːrmə/; Sanskrit: कर्म, IPA: [ˈkɐɾmɐ] (listen); Pali: kamma) in Sanskrit means an action, work, or deed, and its effect or consequences.[1] In Indian religions, the term more specifically refers to a principle of cause and effect, often descriptively called the principle of karma, wherein intent and actions of an individual (cause) influence the future of that individual (effect):[2] Good intent and good deeds contribute to good karma and happier rebirths, while bad intent and bad deeds contribute to bad karma and bad rebirths. As per some scripture, there is no link of rebirths with karma.[3][4]

It sounds more like karma tbh.

"Your leg is broken! This is because you don't have Jesus!"

It's very well established that depression is caused by an imbalance of chemicals in your brain. It's not just something you do to yourself.

It took my sister and her doctors some time to find the right medication for her depression but when she did, night and day.

Exactly this. Replace your mental health with any physical ailment and see how ridiculous it sounds.

My mom was a lifelong devout Christian. She sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She prayed on her knees every night.
She also suffered from severe depression. Her suicide note said that she felt like God was calling her home.

Depression is an illness, and has nothing to do with your religious beliefs. Please get the help you need.

Clinical depression is hereditary. Like Down’s syndrome there is no cure. Treatment is effective as a placebo effect that one is making an effort and “managing”. My opinion is that the “experts” are 1 inch above clueless and can guarantee today’s treatments will be totally discredited in the future.

OP, what is the damage if you give it a try to find Jesus?

She has said things like “it’s a sin to be depressed with everything god has done for me”
“I will know happiness when I’m saved”
“Psychological counseling is sinful because the Bible alone should be enough”

And other statements like that.

Over the past few months I’ve seen her less and less but we were just texting yesterday and she was saying these things again. I told her I didn’t want to talk about the subject with her anymore and ended the conversation but it has upset me again that other than this topic I am friends with her but i find this topic too hurtful and kind of unbelievable to be honest. In many ways, her pushing this issue has led me to even question my own faith .

This is all in spite of the fact that up until the past year, I’ve been a lifelong christian…just not of the “born again” type .

I get it. Her beliefs seem abrasive and you don't believe them.

Just please realize it's highly likely you do the same to other people with your own statements of "fact" (as you see things) without realizing it, and others just nod and move on. To them, it's not requiring a responsive action on their part.

Down’s Syndrome is a developmental disorder, depression is a mental health disorder.

op has been depressed for 5 decades and thinks God is punishing her.

Is your friend' s comments any different than someone telling you to read stoicism? Or maybe another person would tell you to exercise more?

It is just her opinion. I wouldn' t look at it offensively.
