Legality of southern flag on residential properties and pole size limits

Why do you want to hang a big old white flag on your house?

Back a number of years some residents put up enormous flags in their frong yards. HOAs started regulating (ours doesn't allow any standing flagpoles at all) and certain communities did the same. You have to check with local regulations.

Bottom line, I'm disappointed. I wish they all would fly their freak flags so we could easily spot them and avoid.

Go ahead and let your thoughts be known.

I have a neighbor who hung a Gadsden flag in their front room so that it is very visible through their front windows when the lights are in. They are known as the neighborhood jackasses and the rest of us avoid them as much as possible.

Don't they use in VA license tag?

MAGAs get the Gadsden plates.

So annoyed. That was a Revolutionary flag, part of our history co-opted by racists. Same with the OK hand signal. https://www.adl.org/resources/hate-symbol/okay-hand-gesture

Yes, infuriating. The worst part is that the people flying this flag and using the sticker version of it to symbolize their racist, hateful beliefs have no idea of what the flag actually meant. I hate that they’ve ruined it for now and future generations. My kids was looking at historic US flags in an old atlas and now thinks all of our neighbors out in the country are history buffs. It’s hard to explain to a 5 year old.

Your 5 year old kid spends his time thinking about history buffs? Get him outside more to play.

What did the confederate flag actually mean, beyond support for the confederacy and what it stood for?

HOAs are not the law. They can't tell non HOA folks what to do on their property.

Socially, it will be more acceptable in places with fewer to no transplants, Western Loudoun, Fauquier, western PW, Stafford to name a few. Your neighbors should not look at you any differently and you could celebrate your southern heritage without any repercussion.

Even some Black southerners display it.

I live in western PW and we have tons of "transplants" (I am one myself.) I am not aware of any confederate flags in my area. I drive out to Cumberland MD frequently (at least a couple times a month) and have seen them on the backroads in eastern MD plenty of times. There's also what my family calls "the Trump house" on MD 51 a couple miles from the Spring Gap post office. The whole house and yard are decorated with Trump signs and flags--at least 100 of them.

Yes, they can. You agree to the rules when you buy into the HOA. Are you new to earth?

Just to be clear, I’m posting about the Don’t Tread on Me/Gadsden flag!! I’m not trying to reclaim the confederate flag for my child, yikes!

Read the pp's post again. They said HOA's can't tell NON HOA people what to do.

So if I buy a house that is not in an HOA, but is 1/2 a mile from XYZ HOA, XYZ HOA can not tell me what to do with my property.

No one said an HOA can tell non HOA residents what to do, and I’ve never heard of an HOA telling non HOA residents who live a 1/2 mile away what they can or cannot do. Why would they?

NP... PP was responding to the person above who mistakenly assumed OP was in an HOA. No one is asserting than an HOA has any power over people who do not reside in the HOA community.

You should explain to your 5 year old that your actions shouldn't be influenced by a very small minority of hateful people. Most people with those plates likely bought the plates because they look cool. This co-opting thing is ridiculous. We are going to let these a-holes and political correctness dictate what we do? Can't use the OK symbol....insane.
