S/O: 'Magazines are rude' families--what's your deal?

If I get bored with conversations that don't interest me I not only might read a magazine or take out my book or my phone but I might even just go take a nap. Other people, including inlaws, need to know what I'm really like. If they don't like it they can not invite me next time in which case I'll stay home and nap and read. Or, it will give them a new topic of conversation that I'm not interested in.
