Middle aged woman acted like my innocuous French Bulldog was a pitbull. Weird?

Retractable leashes should be banned. If you use one then you should be fined the same as if you had no leash at all.

I assume most outdoorsy people walking on a trail (with a lot of dogs on it) probably like dogs. Outside of scary dogs like pitbulls.

Definitely not true in my case. Not sure why someone would assume that.

Only an idiot would assume that by getting some fresh air or exercise on a walking trail then you probably like dogs.

I'm not going to deny that joy. I love petting other people's dogs and they love petting mine. I'm not petting a pitbull or anything scary but cute breeds are fair game.

Can we stop with the pitbull hate? Just enough already. We get it. You have told us over and over had they are "scary" and should be banned. I am sick of it.

When you can find me one example of a French bulldog mauling anyone I’ll stop. Pits and rotts et al are terrifying dogs. Small cute dogs and family dogs like goldens and doodles and basset hounds and labs are just adorable.

Imagine your doodle as a 10 lb rat. That’s how some people see it. Sure it won’t kill them… but no thank you.

Scared of 20-25 pound Frenchy? That's a bit much, I think.

Some people are scared of spiders or snakes. Go figure.

And this is why so many people hate dog owners. I am a dog lover, own dogs and always happy to meet other people's dogs. Even so, I keep my very cute and small maltipoo close to me and pull her away from others (even others with dogs) until I know they want to meet her or have their dogs meet her. Outdoorsy people like to walk on trails. Not their fault there are dogs on the trail.

You would be wrong to assume that, Most outdoorsy people walking on trails like to walk outdoors on trails. Some love dogs. Some don't care about dogs. Some hate that dogs are on the trails and not on a short leash but understand that they are allowed to be there so don't make a scene and complain.

I never said French bulldogs mauled anyone. What I am saying is I am sick of the "All pit bull dogs are terrifying" because they are not. If you think about it pit bulls have more to fear from humans than we do of them. More pit bulls are harmed and killed by humans!

I say that to say everywhere we walk people want to pet him or call him adorable. He's very easy going. Later in the walk, a seemingly normal looking woman dressed in typical fitness mom garb started backing up and getting tense and seemed to have her hand on mace. I had his retractable chain loose because I figured she was a typical dog friendly person. Then it clicked she was sort of freaking out about my pup and I apologized.

Do some people just have a phobia about dogs in general and can't distinguish between them? And if you do, why walk a trail with so many dogs on it?

Holy crap, what an entitled post. You had a dog on a retractable leash (bad), that was loose (bad), and allowed your dog to approach a stranger (bad), because you assumed *everyone* loves your dog (idiot). And to top it off, you question why a *person* is on a trail, because somehow people with dogs have more of a right to it than others?

YTA, OP.

Agree 100%.

+1. Retractable leashes are the worst.
But yes there are a lot of people with dog phobias and that aren’t knowedgeable about breeds or dog body language. I have had people act like my extremely lazy and friendly golden retriever was like a lion on a leash.

I love dogs but you can’t assume everyone does. Lol wtf.

People on this website are so crazy entitled.

Others have sufficiently addressed the entitlement in your post, but I have to chime in on this because it’s just straight up dangerous. Please read up on kid-dog interactions. Dog Meets Baby on Instagram is a great resource. The vast majority of dogs have not been socialized to be around kids, and the vast majority of owners are not well-versed enough in dog body language to be able to interpret when a kid is making their dog uncomfortable. There’s a reason most people whose dogs have bitten kids say “it came out of nowhere!” No it didn’t, they just didn’t know how to read the signs.

This. I love dogs (especially Frenchies), have dogs, but OMG, the ignorance here has to be troll-level.

Also OP, I am not sure why you are assuming that small "innocuous" dogs necessarily cannot do harm. I love dogs and own dogs. I've also been bitten by random dogs (both relatively small, both with their owners) twice, once while jogging down a quiet residential street. The owners were shocked! Shocked! I definitely would not appreciate a random dog running up to me on a trail.

Weight has nothing to do with this. Some people are scared of common house spiders 🕷 which weigh less than an ounce.

20-25 WITH TEETH THAT BITE? Yes.

I am not pp but I do not like dogs. I am scared of them. I was jumped on and bitten by a "good doggie" as a little girl and have a small scar on my face.
I do not know your french bulldog from anyother similar one.

Retract that lease and keep your dog nearby.
