Middle aged woman acted like my innocuous French Bulldog was a pitbull. Weird?

I assume most outdoorsy people walking on a trail (with a lot of dogs on it) probably like dogs. Outside of scary dogs like pitbulls.

You would be wrong to assume that, Most outdoorsy people walking on trails like to walk outdoors on trails. Some love dogs. Some don't care about dogs. Some hate that dogs are on the trails and not on a short leash but understand that they are allowed to be there so don't make a scene and complain.

I like nature. And trails. I do not like any dogs.

Due to a bad experience, my son is scared of all dogs, even a 6lb chihuahua that couldn’t bite through a tissue. Yes we are working on it but it takes time and phobias are phobias.

Also, I like dogs very well and used to dog sit as a teen but I don’t go to the trails because I like dogs, I go because I like hiking. As everyone else pointed out, those two have nothing to do with each other.

Finally - congrats on having a small dog, guess what it can still bite. The sole time I was bit as a dog sitter was by a tiny tiny dog. Sure, a small dog isn’t going to tear your throat out, but getting bitten and resulting trouble is not worth it.

You shouldn't walk around assuming that anyone is "a typical dog friendly person" so your dog can roam wide and far; you should be visibly in control of your dog at all times. You might think that your dog's size and personality means everyone should love it (or at least give it a chance), but there are people with real fear of dogs due to past encounters, and little kids, and other dogs, none of which should be encountering your dog when you're more than 5 feet away.

Agree that it's the retractable leash. I assume anyone walking their dog on a retractable leash is likely not a responsibly cautious pet owner. I wonder that their dog is not well trained.

Maybe a retractable leash is okay at a picnic or personal campsite but not for walks.

UGH! To me they are ugly and stumpy. I'd prefer a GSD any day of the week.
