Not impressed with Wegman”s on Wisconsin Ave.

I learned this when Wawa opened on 19th street. Turns out, Wawa is a freaking gas station. Why did I have to read about the impending opening of a gas station with no gas pumps on PoPville for 6 months?

K. So Wawa is amazing and I’m not from NJ (only visited). It is much better than a subway or any other deli shop.

Agreed, the Germantown Wegs is excellent. It's too far for me to go there regularly, but I do make weekend trips once in a while.

Why? It’s a supermarket. Same brands and same stuff.

Western NY native who is (im)patiently waiting for the Rockville wegmans to open....fair enough. But what has always appealed to me about Wegmans is that it is the most "complete" grocery store. Other stores may have them beat on particular characteristics, but they are the best combination of quality, selection, and prices, IMO. I tend to leave there with everything I need.

I haven't been to the Wisconson ave location, and I do think that overall Wegmans has suffered a bit from expansion. The produce dept can be more hit or miss than a few years ago.

The Rockville Wegmans is supposed to be one of the smaller urban stores, so I’m not holding my breath until 2025.

Because their produce, meat, fish and prepared food sections are far better than my local Giant and Safeway--clean, well stocked, and always good quality. Their staff are always friendly and helpful. They also have the double-seater kids' carts (so I can bring my two toddlers), and the toy train suspended on the track going above the dairy section--the kids love it.

I’m not sure I actually believe you went there, OP. It’s huge. I mean, really humongous.

The prices are bad and their prepared foods aren’t great, but your complaints are just weird.

Blah! Although I guess that makes sense, the plot of land does not seem all that big.

OP-- I COMPLETELY AGREE!!!!!! What a HUGE disappointment. I love the Wegmans in Germantown and was expecting something like that. I went to the DC Wegmans yesterday and left without buying anything. They didn't have the brands I like for one of things I was wanted to buy. That to me is a FAIL! Plus, it was so insanely crowded I had to dodge aggressive cart pushers all over the place. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I will NEVER go back. I would rather drive to Germantown for the Wegman's experience. Prices are better there as well.

Agree. So small compared to most Wegmans. Just not nearly what I was expecting. Especially given the size of the lot. I thought they would go full on Wegmans.

How do Wegmans and Whole Foods compare on produce, meats/fish, etc?
Anonymous
I love the Chantilly Wegmans but find it expensive compared to Trader Joe's.

I agree as well. I’ve now gone four times because I wanted to give it a proper chance. I am not interested in the ready-to-eat food, I get the sense that’s one of the things they’re known for.

The main things I’ve noticed is that the pricing is comparable to Giant and Safeway (I look at this stuff carefully) and the selection and quality of the produce is not great.

The Wegmans brand stuff seems to be a reasonable deal and the meat quality/ price is pretty good, but not enough to work it into my rotation.

+1. The Fairfax, Ashburn and Leesburg ones are the best. They are huge and have great selection

I think Wegmans moving to small spaces they can’t replicate the same atmosphere/quality
Maybe lack of getting quality staff has affected them.
