Ok. So how about Biden v DeSantis?

DeSantis has a big problem that he has moved far too right into crazyland in order to gain national attention. No one other than our resident conservative bigoted keyboard warrior believes the policies and rhetoric he is pushing isn’t anti-LGTBQ. Furthermore it’s viewed as cruel by moderates and clownish in the face of real national issues. He’s seen as captain COVid with a shockingly unnecessary death toll. His disastrous covid actually helped keep Newsom in CA in office. We don’t want to be like Florida brought Dems out in record numbers. His treatment of the AA community is so appalling from not getting early vaccines into AA areas to removing representation, he’s a few steps away from KKK territory. Let’s not forget how rude and dismissive he’s been of Parkland victims, being pro school shooting always wins suburban women. He’ll do great in the Republican primaries with the white supremists, alt right radio and social media crowd and boomers who live in the villages. This is not enough to win a national election and maybe not enough to even win the primary.

DeSantis scares the hell out of me. He will make Trump look like a walk in the park.

Andy Beshear, current governor of Kentucky. This is a Democrat who was able to win in one of the reddest states in the nation. This is a governor who is used to dealing with a legislature that holds a supermajority in both chambers. This is a governor who is not afraid to stand up to said legislature and to make sweeping changes, like firing the entire school Board of Education and replacing them.

He's young (44), smart and charismatic and would be a strong candidate to step up and fill the void.

Unfortunately, too many of the current crop of Democratic governors are minorities or women. And while Democrats really want to push for a women or minority, now is not the time or political atmosphere to do so. Pushing that agenda will only hurt the party who is currently fighting a large uphill battle. If in 2023, the economy is strong, inflation and gas prices are down and the international political scene has calmed somewhat, then the party could consider a minority or female candidate. But fighting that battle while also fighting a negative political environment is a lose-lose situation. The Democrats have to accept reality that the majority of the country is going to vote for a white male at this time.

HRC actually did win the majority of the popular vote. Republicans easily vote for female senators and congresswomen and governors. It's not a question of people refusing to vote for anything but a white male. It's policies that matter.

The Democrats seem single minded on identity politics elevating lackluster or controversial candidates with unpopular policies. And that is the problem. The party is dominated by the activists, which prevents a proper moderate from breaking through. And a proper moderate is someone who can say, hey, hold on, some of the extreme CRT and trans / gender activists aren't helpful and maybe it's not the best idea to have drag queens performing lewd acts at "family friendly" events, let alone visitng elementary schools. But the party won't allow it, which is why the Republicans are rapidly seizing the middle ground as the voice of "sanity."

The reason DeSantis and others are having winning recognition by portraying the Democrats as extremists is because, well, some of the Democratic policies are extremist. I don't think it's helpful for Biden to boast about banning detransitioning therapy when a growing number of former trans are coming out about detransitioning, so it's quite evidently a real thing. And it's not helpful when the party seems more concerned about exposing elementary kids to gender politics than inflation.

I definitely agree that democrats are losing a lot of moderate ground, and it’s going to be a huge, huge problem.

…..For the love of all, we need younger [non-activist] representation!!

But that doesn't matter. Republicans are only 28% of the electorate. Democrats used to be much larger, over 40%, but have dropped to a mirrored 28%. Independents are now 42% of the electorate, so appealing to the moderates and independents is key.

Right now, neither Biden nor Trump or DeSantis appeals to the middle and Independents. If either party can find a candidate that does appeal to the middle, they will take the election.

In 2020, Biden appealed more to the middle and won the election. At this point, both parties are pushing further away from the middle and that is costing them dearly.

Yes, I definitely agree with your thoughts on the middle.

But, I think this is why it matters that republicans always fall in line. With both parties at about 30%—and democrats with a painful history of NOT voting when they don’t love a candidate—democrats will likely be in real trouble soon.

This is the left's take, and I think it will alienate voters. DeSantis's effort to ban sex education in K-3 was widely supported by voters. The left had to dub the bill "dont say gay" in order to create a strawman to fight, bc DeSantis was playing the middle far too well. https://www.wsj.com/articles/dont-say-gay-is-popular-you-dont-say-ron-desantis-florida-law-elementary-school-11648849131. You can say it limigs expression of gay people, but it equally limits expression of straight people. You face an uphill battle convincing voters that adults should be able to discuss their gender preferences, sexual preferences, etc in the kindergarten classroom.

DeSantis's approach to covid is also considered a plus by many. He has a lot of old people in his state, who are more vulnerable. So he focused on them and not keeping school children at home. This makes him.... a breath of fresh air to many. Not "far too right into crazyland." Same with the criticism that he didnt give black people early access to vaccines- this is a positive to people who think race should not be a factor that is considered in health care matters. Equal access is valued by most people, not race based access.

He also sounds like a sensible person when he talks. Unlike Trump, he doesnt come off as a narcissistic weirdo.

But there is no teaching about sexuality in K-3. That’s the point. It’s just a culture war on a bogeyman

Unless you mean a childrens picture book about a family of two dads, then you can suck eggs.

Nope, that's not what I mean at all. There was a long thread listing exactly what the family life curriculum for K-3 involved, and it was heavy on "gender identity" and other issues that young kids simply don't need to even think about. It had nothing to do with family composition - two dads/two moms/whatever. And you people know this. You simply can't resist twisting everything to suit your narrative.

And "suck eggs"? Seriously?

Yeah, the bill was widely supported by parents and when people actually were told what was in it rather than the leftist propaganda it was even more supported. Like 95 percent of parents were for it one they were told what was in it in an article I read.

Regardless - teaching kids about transgenders and drag queen story hours aren’t really winning positions for a political party to take. Also with someone telling people they’re racists and how our country is racist doesn’t work well either. The woke BS doesn’t matter and matters even less when people need to decide if they’re going to fill up the tank or eat that day as is the case with a lot of Americans now. And having a senile old man yelling nonsense and talking like he’s lost his marbles isn’t reassuring

DeSantis isn’t a super wealthy career Washington elite who has enriched himself in the backs of Americans. He’s likeable, he actually stands up to the sycophantic media and is more of a regular Joe then the senile in office now.

+1 He blew it all in order to win the primary but now he can't pretend to be a moderate like Youngkin.

After 2016 I will never, ever, ever feel confident in my predictions. But I don't think this will be an easy general election for him.
